I don't know what you meant when you said you double batted - did you use the two together? One over top of the other?.
Yes that is exactly what I do. I love the definition two layers of batting give to the quilting, almost a faux trapunto. It does make for a very warm quilt though, so I wouldn't recommend it for warmer climates. Also I think it would be very difficult to do quilting by hand or on a DSM unless it was set up to quilt on a rack system. I LA quilt on a rack and my LA is a real work horse and has no trouble quilting through two layers of batting.
