Making quilt for MIL out of fabrics I really don't like is sure a challenge

I've wanted to make the Carpenter's Star for a long time and decided to do one for my MIL. Problem is I really don't like the colors. :-( A friend of mine wisely told me yesterday to remember gifts are made with the recipient in mind. Oh yeah, I thought it was all about me! Lol! It's a surprise for MIL, but these are the colors in her sunroom, which is where I think she will use it. Her walls are the minty green and her favorite reading chair is a wingback in these colors, muted. I think it'll match her house perfectly- I'm just not loving it. Sure does make it hard for me to finish it. Oh well, we'll be making a trip there in the spring so I'm finishing it now and having it ready to deliver. I just started the quilting on it yesterday on my DSM.

The colors kinda grow on you if you keep looking at them. I think she will be pleased just because you made it for her. Get 'er done. It will make her happy.

I think it will really pop when it is in the sun room....and she will love it!!!

I think the colors are great. I'm in the process of completing one as a project graduation donation using the school colors of black and gold with a cream background. Happy Holidays!

Stay strong....I'm in agreement on colors. On the bright side....design looks good...can see your points. Great quilting.

I think it's pretty and the paisley print is gorgeous.

I know exactly what you mean - it's hard to work on a quilt that uses colors that don't speak to you. But you've done a great job with the pattern and the smile on her face when she gets it will make it all worthwhile.

It is very pretty

Thank you! I do love this pattern. I think my MIL will really like it as she seems to love anything I make her. :-)

I would struggle too with those fabrics... but concentrate on how happy she will be with the final results .

What size are your blocks... I did a single quilt using carpenter Star with double circles, I am to do a super king size for my DS & DIL with sides to reach the floor. I started on it yesterday but decided last night that 3.5 inch squares are toooooo small. I would be working on it beyond my years...LOL

These start out as 6" blocks. Oh yeah- 3 1/2" blocks would drive me nuts with this fabric. haha! This actually went together very quickly.

roadrunr 12-21-2012 06:30 AM

I also don't quit like the color combination (it grows on you , though), but you did a good job and your mil will be very happy to receive it, especially since you made it with her in mind.

As soneone else said, your points are perfect...great technique! Isn't it funny when someone has to remind you "It's not all about you?" I never use to like yellow, now I find I put it in every project...tastes change over time.

I think it is pretty. Maybe not my favorite colors but it will be very nice once it is quilted. We all don't like the same colors but the quilts come out beautiful.

fayza 12-21-2012 08:05 AM

I completely agree with JuneBillie. So if you're different I am too :) I think the colors look fine together, like they were meant to be.

It is harder to work on something that isn't my taste...I totally agree. It looks good though!

Nonna Judi 12-26-2012 07:46 PM

Not my first color combo choice, but if it compliments her room she will be thrilled. Great pattern!
