how lucky i just love working with batiks

mumtoliam 12-28-2009 06:15 PM

A quick question - is there a right or a wrong way to batik fabric? I have turned over and turned over and don't really see a difference in these fabrics

mumtoliam 12-28-2009 06:15 PM

It is for my Grandfather's 80th birthday!

Deb watkins 12-28-2009 06:18 PM

Is that like a stack and whack method? Love the material you have.

marsye 12-28-2009 06:20 PM

Like those colors.

mumtoliam 12-28-2009 06:26 PM

I stacked the fabric up to cut it using the TRI-RECS ruler... a bit like Stack and Whack - cut strips, use 60 degree triangle but you cut another triangle either side of it... make sense?

mumtoliam 12-28-2009 06:30 PM

This is similar to what I am making but I cut 5 1/2" strips and I will have a bigger block

Gorgeous! I love batiks! It is very hard to tell the right side from the wrong side. I think that's a good thing! You can't really mess up! That's going to be a gorgeous quilt!

Quilter7x 12-28-2009 06:32 PM

wow! very ambitious!

rb. 12-28-2009 06:37 PM

There is no right or wrong side to batiks, which is part of why I love them so much.

SharonC 12-28-2009 06:50 PM

Wow...love your batiks. This is going to be a really beautiful (in a masculine way :)) quilt.

chewboo 12-28-2009 07:28 PM

sometime on a batike one side is a little brighter but really no difference

n2scraplvr 12-28-2009 07:34 PM

Love the batiks and that pattern! Yours will be a gorgeous quilt!

Janstar 12-28-2009 07:58 PM

Deecee 12-29-2009 04:03 AM

Absolutley love your fabrics and no - I don't think they have a significant difference to which side to use.

There is a right side but sometimes it's very hard to tell. If you look at an area where the dye is a bit blurry, the right side will be more crisp and the wrong side more blurry. The selvage will be smoother on the right side as well. I usually put a chalk mark on the wrong side or make sure to keep them stacked in the same direction all the time. If your triangles are the same angles on each corner it won't matter if you end up flipping some pieces over. If you've studied them and can't tell the difference between one side and the other, no one else will either.

Jim's Gem 12-29-2009 10:33 AM

Looks like it will be a great quilt. Looking forward to seeing the finished quilt!

AkAngel 12-29-2009 10:50 AM

This is going to be lovely when your finished.
I have this block of sorts with batiks. I absolutely love how they look in a finished piece but I don't enjoy the process working with them. I'm not sure if its because I can't envision the finished project or what it is but it really blocks me from doing alot with them.
Does anyone else have this with certain fabrics? Just curious

Very nice! I haven't used Batiks yet, but I really want to! :)

Oklahoma Suzie 12-29-2009 08:46 PM

Wow, just love batik. Great colors.

Boston1954 12-29-2009 10:13 PM

I heard on television once that if you don't like the front of the fabric, turn it over. Of course, if you like both sides, you may have to toss a coin. Whatever side you like should be okay.

Iluv2quilt 12-30-2009 06:49 AM

I love batiks and would sew with them every day if I could. Your quilt is going to be beautiful!

I agree about no right or wrong side to batiks. They are nearly identical. I just love the fabrics you chose, and I can't wait to see how it turns out. I think another batik quilt is in my near future!!!

mumtoliam 01-01-2010 04:17 AM

Well I finished piecing the top, and I just bought the batting and the thread for quilting. Tomorrow when I get up, finish my morning housework chores, I am gonna pin baste it all ready for quilting!!

littlehud 01-03-2010 01:58 PM
