Ok I finished all my 27 log cabing patriotic blocks I am very happy with them. I am using a pattern I found in a country book and well lets just say I have no idea how I messed this up but really need your help. As you can tell by the pictures the houses and the flag are about an 2 inches short. My seem allowance thing did not move but how did I end up with 8" log cabins and 7" houses/flag. Ok no worries you guys are amazing at fixing things right I just know you will have the answer because I cannot think straight right now.
My very cool logcabin and houses/flags |
Add spacer strips between the ones that don't fit.

OK now take a deep breath.... don't forget to exhale though
Walk away from it for the night and tomorrow everything will look clearer. You mentioned the seam allowances, hmmm could that be it? Do you still have leftover fabric from the houses? If so can you add a row to them? Maybe? :? It will be ok. Your a smart cookie and I think with some rest you'll figure it out. Faith :XD: |
Add a small strip on to the ends of the house strip, no one will know it wasn't part of the original design
|
I would add just enough spacer strips say between a couple of the houses and that should fix the difference. It is a lovely
pattern . :D  |
I agree add the spacer strips to the houses, I think it will give them definition and will help with the shortage. You know what they say about mistakes......Some of the best things in the world has come from them.

It appears to me that the 2 bottom widths (rows 5 & 6) are about 3 strips wider than a couple rows above.
The row with houses - row 4 - looks to be lacking 3 strips on the right and 1 on the left. Then rows 3 and 2 look to be lacking 2 strips on the right side and Row 1 looks like it's missing 3 strips on the right. Is that what's going on here? Are your strips all the same width? Is it 2 inches? DIane |
It will be beautiful! Just add what you need to, kind of design your own.

It is an optical illusion I double checked them all they are all 8"s squared. I have decided I am going to design a town house to put into the middle we will see how that works will sew again tomorrow to late tonight!!

Beautiful blocks!!!!!!!!!! :D
|
Put small tree blocks within the house strip to add the extra width and the flag needs a pole.
|
Add some creative spacer strips~
|
Take out one of the big houses and make two smaller houses to fill in.
|
A town house is a great idea! I agree with the others too...with the LC block spacers added anywhere will work out just fine! Its gonna be so pretty when you are done..its a cool pattern!
|
If you love old quilts, they have all sorts of mistakes, creative fixes and that makes them unique. Love them. You'll find a way to fix this that will make it uniquely your quilt. Be creative.
|
If you add a narrow strip to each side of the houses, make the top of the strip with a different fabric into a triangle to give the houses a 3-D look.
|
There are some really creative ideas in this thread. My favorite ideas is adding tress in between the houses. Once you decide which one to use, no one will ever know the difference. This is going to be a beautiful quilt!
|
Do you have your house row all sewn together into one strip? It looks like you have.
Are your log cabins still individual blocks? I think, once you sew your log cabins together the houses and cabins will all match up beautifully. It always amazes me to see the difference in the rows when I start attaching the blocks to each other. Inches disappear! If the above is not true then go with some "coping" strips! A coping strip is a quilter's best friend! P.S. It's going to be a lovely quilt when you're finished. |
Quiltforme, I'm sorry. It was late when I was studying this last night and I neglected to mention that I love your blocks! LCs are my most favorite quilt block and yours are beautiful. Can't wait to see what it looks like when re-done. DIane

I DID IT!! I figured out what to do at 2 am this morning I drew up another house pattern. Figured out the cutting diagram then because I was not tired I cut it out and sewed it. MY first ever pattern!!! I will try to post pictures but keep getting a 501 error. It might be me but will try again!

I am so excited I was able to figure out the row of houses issue.
I drew the little brown house and figured out the cutting measurements I am so proud of myself for doing this. Before I would have done the strips but because this is going to be another auction quilt I wanted perfection. Now the others will have sashing around them but the row house was special! Thank you for all of your advice |
Way to go!
Looks great! Gale |
