Mariner's Compass Using Quiltsmart Foundation
 

My daughter (azchrisg) and I took some classes last week at Celebrate! Quilts quilt camp here in Flagstaff. One of the classes we took was a Mariner's Compass using Quiltsmart foundation piecing that was taught by Carmen Geddes. The class was a lot of fun and the result were fantastic! (Chris posted a thread here http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...ml#post6129413 with a pic of hers) and here is a picture of mine. These are just the center of the quilt tops and will soon have background and borders added to complete the tops.
These "compasses" measure about 45" in diameter; very dramatic looking!

It's gorgeous!!

QuiltSmart sure makes it easy to do a complicated/time consuming pattern. I finished a Lone Star using the QuiltSmart foundation in 2 days. Guild members were impressed that my center was absolutely flat and all the intersections match. Do be aware that the iron-on foundation does add quite a bit of weight to the finished project. I would rather have the weight instead of another UFO thrown into the closet.

I did buy the foundation for a Lone Star too! And like you said, it adds a little weight, but so worth it to be totally FLAT when you are done! Taking the time to trim the fabrics down to 1/4" seam allowance after stitching helps alleviate some of the bulk/weight that would otherwise build up also. The completed examples that Carmen had in class did not seem any "heavier" than normal for finished quilts.
