Not familiar with fusible gridded interfacing. Are the squares then stitched to the interfacing, or just fused?

The quilt I made started out with 2" gridded interfacing that was 10 feet wide x 12 feet long. Here is what it looked like hanging on the wall (and down onto the floor)
