Mexican Star
3 Attachment(s)
Hello! I am having trouble deciding on a final border and I’m sure I will get different opinions, but I’m asking anyway. Do you like the lighter green or the darker navy? I usually put a darker border but…. What I really wish is I would have made a wider gray border. Oh well.
Anyway, this is the Mexican Star made from a video by Eleanor Burns, Quilt in a Day. I used one 20 pc jelly roll but added the navy print cut strips for 3 blocks. I also used leftover navy in the center and green yardage for most of the 4 squares. Gray strips I cut and background, white with navy dots, is yardage. It measures 72x89 as is. |
I think I would go with the darker navy. But you know what they say, whatever color border you choose, the quilt becomes that color quilt. The border seems to make the color pop. I really like the grey also. Good pattern.
Beautiful! I can't decide on the navy or green border, but I'm leaning towards the navy. Nice work!
Both are nice but in my opinion........LOL
I would not add a sold border unless using the gray for a wider one. The other two borders look to me like the quilt top would be just laying on top of another fabric. The quilt is beautiful. |

I decided to try the gray and I think I really like it, do you? Could I just add to the strip I already have on or do I need to take it off and add a whole new wider strip for border, if I decide on gray?
Onebyone's comment that the border make the whole quilt that color - never thought about it, but in this case, it's so.
I definitely did not like the border. It seemed harsh with the rest of the quilt. I did like the green one a lot better and that made all the greens stand out in the top. But I do like the gray one best. As far as whether to take the narrower border off first and then add the wider one - I think the seam line - although very subtle, sort of defines the center of the quilt. |
Gray looks great! The Navy and Green are not bad but the gray is more neutral and can be used anywhere.
What kind of quilting are you planning on doing on the gray? If it is a pattern that will look better on a continuous band of fabric, then you may want to replace the first border with a bigger border. If the extra seam line in the border won't make a difference in the quilting pattern, then you don't necessarily have to replace the first border. Good job on the quilt! |
Between navy and green, I liked the navy because to my eye it made the centre pop whereas the green seemed to blend with the stars. However, the grey is great. And, leave on the narrow border.
I like the grey too. And I would leave the narrow piece on. After quilting and washing you probably would never notice it
The gray looks like the quilt is floating not laying. So pretty. The binding can be any color in the blocks or gray. Lately I have been using the border fabric as my binding too.
Love this quilt and all the border choices, but personally like the addition of the green. What if you added a narrow green border or even a flange before adding the second grey?
Beautiful quilt! I love the gray for the border!
Fisrt of all, that is going to be a beautiful quilt. I feel that the grey border just makes the quilt look more complete ....... finished
I think I would add a 1 or 1 1/2 inch white border, then another gray border to make it the size you are wanting. Just my humble opinion. You always do such neat work
I agree with Susie Q. I like the green and I also thought of a green flange between the gray borders if you decide to go with the gray.
My first thought was both .... green, then the darker border.
Then I saw you were considering more of the grey. Keep what you have add what I call a "racing stripe" of colour. Not too wide, maybe only 1/2" or 3/4" finished? Then your extra grey. But seriously, anyway you go, it's going to be great. The look changes according to the colour chosen for the border, as in this case they can all work! |
Lovely top and any of those borders look nice. For me it would depend on what colour scheme of the room it was going in. The navy and gray are safe choices if you don’t have a spot picked out for it. The green border really picks up the green in the blocks for a more spring feel.
you could always make another color an inner border, then the gray. or use for binding. lovely colors all!!
Love the idea of a green flange with the grey border! Please share the pattern name.
You sure do make some beautiful quilts! I find myself wondering how many hours per week do you sew?
I liked the green as it brought out the greens of the piecing but then I saw the grey and here again, it brought out the diagonal strips. I wasn't so keen on the darker piece. Beautiful quilt! Love the colors you used.
I prefer no border as I don't think either of these 2 fabrics ADD anything to the quilt.
That is beautiful. I'm sure you will get some good ideas from Board members.
I like the green... or the gray. No reason to take the first gray border off. I'd just add the extra gray on it.
You always make such beautiful quilts! |
I'm in the grey/green flange/grey camp - great looking top no matter how you finish it though.
I like the gray small stopper border you have on the quilt, then I would use green and then gray for the binding. The darker fabric makes the center of the quilt look faded. FYI...I have been told I have no color sense from more than 1 person. lol

Thank you all for your opinion.I knew from the asking, I would get a mix of opinions, but I decided on the gray. Bearsingray, you and I were thinking alike, whether that's good or bad, you tell me-lol QuiltMom2- I used to sew something everyday, whether it was a zip bag, coaster, purse. Since getting into quilt piecing and quilting, I still sew, but not every day. When I do piece,, I can stay at it all day long. I like finished projects. However, I am still in therapy for my wrist and wonder at times if I'll ever be able to move a quilt around to free motion quilt again. I have 3 ready to quilt when I am up to the challenge, this one, Nora's on point and a Play Ball for my great grandson. I would like to ruler quilt the Mexican Star but that will be harder for me, I know. Nora wants her throw to remain soft, not stiff with quilting stitches so it may be in the ditch quilting. Rylan's will most likely be stippling if I can manage any of these. I repeat, thank you all for your advice. You are most kind. BTW, I kept the first border on, as I had sewn my seam with a serger ! You know how much I like a neat back! |
Perhaps a wider gray border and then use the green for binding?
