Mickey and friends

1 Attachment(s)
My niece loves all things Disney (her daughters are named after Disney characters) so when Missouri Star had this layer cake as their daily deal I immediately thought of her. The pattern is Missouri Star's half-hexi block. Making the hexis resulted in left over half-diamonds so I sewed those together to use in the border. (with bonus quilt inspector - I've given up trying to get a picture without him).

A great use of leftovers in the border. Your niece will be one happy girl with her "Mickey" quilt.

Great quilt, nice pattern! First thought the cat was appliqué :o ...until I noticed the tail and read your comment about "quilt inspector"

GailG 07-22-2016 02:31 PM

Great quilt! That template is a special on MSQC today.

MargeD 07-22-2016 02:45 PM

Great quilt and I think your quilt inspector agrees. He and my cat TJ could be twins, as they look so alike.

All2Pieces 07-22-2016 03:20 PM

The border sets off the rest of the quilt. Great job!

kaylfordsollimo 07-22-2016 04:32 PM

That block just says "stained glass" to me. The border is really clever.

BrendaK 07-22-2016 05:36 PM

Super. Love the border. BrendaK

I have watched the video for this pattern. I would think you could make those blocks in one line a mile long and then cut off the blocks as you need them. You would waste a lot less that way. I haven't done it so don't know if it would work. I would just keep adding the black strips and half hexies and cut off blocks as I go. Do you think it would work?

Lovely and a great use of your left overs for border.

Your niece is going to love it...the black sashing sets of the Disney prints nicely and I love what you did with the leftovers in the border. Great job!

I don't know why that wouldn't work. It's essentially a braid quilt cut into 12.5 inch blocks. Jenny's method does create a lot of waste. I made a table runner with part of it and I still quite a lot left.

I sent it to them for quilting. They included a nice note when they returned it.

And thanks to everyone for the nice comments.

That's a great idea, I never thought of that!! I've made two quilts now from that pattern. Also made a couple table runners, adding strips until I got the length I wanted. That would save a lot of fabric and would be much quicker. The pattern results in blocks 12 1/2 inches long and mine were 13 inches wide that had to cut down to 12 1/2 to make the block square. By keep adding half hexes, I could cut the blocks square at 13". Going to give it a try on the next one. Everyone that has seen my quilts like that pattern.

marcias 07-23-2016 12:55 PM

You need to send this pic to MSQC so they can see what you did with the cut off parts. I never did it because of the waste. Thank you. It is gorgeous.

maryellen2u 07-23-2016 09:26 PM

It's a great quilt and lovely generous gift. Now I am curious. What are the daughters' names?
