microwave bowls

2 Attachment(s)
In September, I'm going to visit my sister in southern Wisconsin, and our brother will be coming from Oregon with his girlfriend. We haven't seen him in 6 years, and we've never met his girlfriend. I wanted to take some small gifts for everybody, so decided to make them all microwave bowls. I also made a dish drying mat for my sister and am in the process of making a fold-up shopping tote for the girlfriend. My brother's birthday will happen while they are here, so I will be making a mug rug and a coffee sleeve for him next. Here are the bowls. My brother loves baseball and his girlfriend likes cats, so those were easy fabric choices. I found the typewriter keys fabric in my stash and knew it would be perfect for my sister who, like me, loves vintage things.

can you use regular warm and natural batting in these? I've wanted to try one but my pattern called for the special W&N and I haven't bought that.

My husband says these are the best thing I have ever made. They are fabulous gifts. There are so many beautiful fabrics out there. And I see you have found many of those fabrics.

That's a great idea! Useful, appropriate to the individual and easy to make. Good for you.

Very nice bowls. I have made several of these and find that they flatten out pretty quickly so now I don't bother making it a bowl just make it larger than a plate and flat. Works just as well and so easy to sew up a few. I made four each for my sons' families and my granddaughters and grandsons who are living on their own now. They love them and it saves fingers...LOL

The Warm & Natural Warm Tater batting is recommended, but plain cotton batting may be okay. I found another brand at JoAnn's and got it with a coupon, so it was very inexpensive. I haven't used that one yet, but it must be just as good.

Thanks for all the kind words, everyone. My kids love using their bowls. This is one of those things that I've made for other people but not for myself yet. I will have to get a move on and make one for us!

Thank you, Leslie. I will look the next time I go to JoAnn's. Once I get the right batting I will probably make a tater bag at the same time.

The bowls are new to me. Can they go into the microwave? What are they made of?

They are meant to hold a bowl in the microwave, to protect your hands from the hot bowl. They are sort of like form-fitting pot holders. They are made with cotton fabric and a cotton batting made specifically for use in the microwave. The brand I used was The Warm Company's Warm Tater batting. It doesn't have anything in it that might catch fire while being heated. I've made some from a tutorial here on the Quilting Board, but these were made with a pattern I bought.

What was the name of the other brand? I have it suggested to use something called Wrap and Zap. But also just that all items must be 100 percent cotton. I have read where people have used terry cloth towels for the batting too.

There must be 25 tutorials on the internet about these things. I am just now getting around to making some myself. Might be nice gifts.

Your microwave bowls are wonderful!! Did you use cotton thread?? Wondering if poly thread would melt....
Could you please post the name of your pattern?
thank you

Thanks for the nice comment. I always use cotton thread. I don't think I would want to risk melting with poly thread. The pattern I bought is called Hot Bowl Hot Pad by Whistlepig Creek Productions, #1217. It includes different corner treatments and a spatter cover pattern.

The other brand was Pellon's WrapnZap. I haven't used it yet, but it looks like the Warm Tater. I guess I'm not too adventurous to try the terry cloth, especially since the Warm Tater and WrapnZap were made specifically for use in the microwave.
