While at my MIL quite awhile ago I saw this out in the garden over the green beans to keep them warm and extend the harvest. I did a double take and then had to convince her that I wanted it! She thought it was just an old raggy thing. Yes it is falling apart and I love that. It hung above my fireplace at our old house. Currently it is not being used.

It is from the late 1930s. Machine pieced and hand quilted. MIL won it in a raffle with a 25 cent ticket when she was first married so it must have been made about 1938.

It is a Dresden Plate isn't it?

I'm so glad you rescued it! It looks in pretty good shape to have been in the garden in the weather.

What a beloved treasure. Check out the rest of the vegetables, to see whats keepin them warm. A beautiful Dresden Plate. I'm not a piece quilter, but I'm cutting the pieces right now to make a Fancy Dresden Plate. It is one of my all time favorites. Lucky, Lucky, U

I was surprised at how HARD it was to convince her that it wasn't garbage and that I wanted it. I am so glad she let me have it!

What a find! The quilting is really pretty. Buy MIL a new blanket at the thrift store to keep her beans warm!

Dorothy, look through the liknks and resources section in main page for leads to lots of online patterns. There are lots of great free patterns for all types of quilting.

I love the old quilts. It's great to have family history you can wrap up in.

YES! It is a Dresden Plate...my favorite of all quilt patterns and I'm   with envy for your "find" in the green bean patch! Wow, certainly goes to show some peoples trash is a treasure. I'd chew tinfoil and comb my hair with a cheese grater to find such a treasure. Thanks for sharing!

Great find. I found a similar treasure in Lancaster last year - full size quilt - double wedding ring in a junk store. You are sooooo lucky.

MissTreated 01-07-2008 09:51 PM

Great story! My MIL would have tried to sell it to me for about $500!
