Monster sized scrappy quilt

Gosh...I'm so proud of this quilt. It's the largest I've ever made (92 x 104) and totally scrappy, except for the backing. My bed is tall and I wanted something that covered the box springs at least, so it's a king for a tall queen. Because my SRii Grace frame wasn't large enough I had Kathy at Cotton Cabin Quilt Shop in Dubuque, IA quilted it for me in a medium meander. It's perfect. Added a green border, the backing is bright blue, with a dark yellow binding. Took over 3 hours with a dog walking break somewhere in there to do the binding by machine. Now I want to do another scrappy quilt, but I have made up 9 kits from my fabric stash that are sitting here waiting on me. Maybe a little bit here and a little bit there and I'll get another one made.

I love it too! I think I saw some of your piecing in an earlier post, of the 4 Patch with rectangle strips in between. I had never seen it pieced this way but it came out great. Looks somewhat vintage to me. I really like your green border fabric and also your blue backing. Can you say where/ what fabric it is and is the backing 108 inch or did you piece it?

Great scrappy. 😁

I am in love! What a stellar scrappy happy quilt!

that is great!! I love it.... like toogie I love the backing and would like to know what it is

lindaschipper 01-09-2023 03:41 PM

toogie.....you have just taught me a valueable lesson! Keep a notebook with fabric yardage, manufacturers, etc. I had the blue's selvage laying around for months...yesterday figuring I no longer needed it I threw it away. Drug through the trash for it but can't find it. I'm thinking it was either Riley Blake or Moda and 44 wide. The green I still have yardage of and am going to use in in one of my kits. "Riley Blake Designs Pattern C8941...Painters Palette by j. Wecker Frisch", it also is 44 wide.

Thank heaven for check registers...I bought 9 yards of a blue for backing from Green Fairy Quilts. That has to be it! The green may also have come from there as I've had it for a while. Good luck finding these, they are 1st class quilt shop fabrics!!

Great scrap quilt!

oreo1912 01-09-2023 08:26 PM

That is gorgeous. I have lots of scrappy squares and rectangles. I never thought to put them together in the same quilt.

lindaschipper 01-09-2023 10:33 PM

toogie.....The blue is Riley Blake Sunshine and Dewdrops Toss Blue C11972. I went back into Green Fairy Quilts and checked by previous orders and used my order number that I wrote in my check register to find it. Hope this helps!

lindaschipper 01-09-2023 10:45 PM

Finally found some information on where I got it. Riley Blake Sunshine and Dewdrops Toss Blue C11972 from Green Fairy Quilts. I bought 9 yards for the backing (44') and only have scraps left over. Good luck in your search.

Gorgeous Scrappy!

I love it. I've been saving squares of fabric for a scrappy quilt. Did you use a pattern? If so can you tell me the name of it? What size blocks did you use? I love it.

peaceandjoy 01-10-2023 05:47 AM

Absolutely love this. My favorite style, and so many wonderful fabrics! Any tips on how you made it? Do the rectangles equal the length of the 4-patches?

That is beautiful scrappy quilt. They are my favorite kind to make and look at. You did a wonderful job. You will enjoy it for a long time.

Ladies....the pattern for this monster quilt came out of my quirky little brain. It all started with me making a throw pillow with some scraps and liking the way it looked. I just kept making blocks. The four patch blocks start out as 2 1/2" squares, alternating a color with a neutral. I stacked three four patch blocks together. The rectangle blocks each measure 7.5" with two of them sewn together to make one long one. Sew these to the side of the four patch blocks. Quite simple but very repeative.
My husband thinks I should copywrite it and sell the pattern, but I had a hard enough time just discribing the process here for you!!
I want to make another one, but using only one main colorway, such as all blues & creams, or greens and creams, or the ever popular red and white.
If you decide to make one have fun with it.

Thank you for the instructions! I have scads of 2-1/2" squares at home, so would only need to cut some of my 2-1/2" strips into the rectangles.

I like the idea of doing this in one colorway as well. I hope to see one!

Gemm 01-13-2023 08:18 AM

What a great quilt - I love how my eye sort of follows the rectangles across the quilt and draws my attention to all of the different fabrics. Just lovely!

Jingle 01-13-2023 07:35 PM

Totally beautiful. I love scrappy quilts.

maryb119 01-23-2023 04:21 PM

I love scrappy quilts! Great job. I have been in the Cotton Cabin several times. It's a cute shop.

Lena1952 01-24-2023 04:52 AM

I love scrappy quilts and your quilt is gorgeous! Thanks for sharing the construction. My only question is: do you still have scraps left after this lovely was finished? My guess would be yes :-)

Yes Lena I still have scraps left over. Now I'm working on using some up in a scrappy square in a square. Funny, but my scrap pile isn't dwindeling!!

margied 01-25-2023 09:38 AM

I love it but it is big!
