That is because it is a photograph printed on to the fabric. The technique used is to print a photo onto the fabric then thread paint over it. Basically no applique is involved it is all thread painting. I attended a seminar at MQX by Jennifer Day who does this technique. I saw that quilt at Syracuse.

Thank you for taking the time to share with us. I think the quilts featuring well known and loved works is simply spectacular and makes such a wonderful group. Such inspiration!

Wowzee - those are way above my skill level. Beautiful to see. Thanks for sharing.

I love those puppies. Their faces are SO expressive.

Those awesome thread/fabric pieces need a "name" other than "quilt". In my mind quilt means something to snuggle/keep warm under on a bed/ couch, etc. these, although sandwiched together are so much different, they should have another title.....
Each one shown is so spectacular in itself, like a painting, it is its own thing........ |
You are exactly right - these are not "quilts" - they are paintings done with fabric and thread. My DD lives in Paducah and we go to the AQS Quilt Show every April and if it wasn't for her wanting to go to the actual show, I would not go to the show but go to the Vendors all over town and skip the show. I go home so depressed because my quilts are just bed quilts - not wall quilts or whatever they call them.
