and then today found out that my husband's cousin will be visiting this week. I also realized that when her baby was born 6 months ago, I never made her anything because the baby was born exactly on the day that DH's grandpa died, and it just slipped my mind in all the uproar and funeral, etc.

So today I whipped out two more bibs from the same pattern, one plain and one string pieced. I cut a pattern out of newspaper to use as a foundation for the strings. The bib pattern is a free online pattern I use often, found here: http://chickpeastudio.typepad.com/ch...ea-infant.html

How do they slip over the head? Are they made of a knit material?

I make simple bibs using a towel (check the clearance shelves at Kohl's) for one side, and flannel for the other. My girls loved these bibs so much that they ask me to make a few for every friend that has a baby. I get reports back from new Moms that these bibs really work.

yeah, I can see how toweling would make a good bib. I like to use flannel for the backs of my bibs, too.

I've made several of these in adult size for my step mom who has had a stroke and is in a care home. I use terry cloth on the back to be absorbent. She loves them and is always showing them off to her friends. I tried the slip over your head, but she didn't like them, so now they are all velcro.

I use wash cloths to make bibs. Cut a large deep (2-2 1/2") U shape for the neck. Use wide bias tape to make the ties and encase the neckline (I do this step all with one piece of bias). That's it - you're finished! Use as a bib and when baby is finished with lunch, wet the bib and use it to wash up baby and then toss in wash. These bibs are much better than any you can buy and last for a long time.
