More Feathers - This Time with Paint!

Ok, last experiment for a while...my paintstik's came in today so I had to play a little!!

Here's what I started with...

<a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/MC5Yxthos2vbo_c1-gR5Zw4k2utN3aPUAGmr6QMBtTI?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-sw27eYYjmg8/UNISzwtTZhI/AAAAAAAAEnA/RvxPckM-5MI/s400/DSCN0764.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a>

The painting turned out pretty awful but I got a feel for what it does...here's a shot of an area I thought turned out really neat!

Cool! My order of paintstiks came in last week but I haven't had a chance to play with them yet!

Maggie_Sue 12-19-2012 11:34 AM

Wow your feathers are just beautiful, and the work with paintstiks looks really nice to me.

pumpkinpatchquilter 12-19-2012 11:59 AM

Thank you! I'm really excited to play around with these. The paint was kinda - bleh - but I need to buy paint brushes and some brush cleaner this evening so I can really play. But it's neat to think of all the different things that could be done with them!

Does anyone know where I can order them from? I am in Canada and need to pay with PayPal.

Yes! Dharma Trading Co - most matte colors were about $4.35 each (some are higher but not many) and I paid with Paypal. They have tons of colors and the shipping was FAST! I ordered these on Sunday evening and they arrived today - I'm in Ohio and they are in California. I would imagine they ship to Canada, most places do! :)

Which paint sticks are you using?

Love your feathers and what you did with the paint sticks. I have been thinking about getting some of these.
You can also get the paint sticks here: http://cedarcanyontextiles.com/
They have a once a week newsletter that you can sign up for that is very informative and they have "rubbings" that can be used with the sticks. Gosh, there is so much to learn and do!!! Might need a second lifetime to get it all in.

Love the feathers. Is there a tutorial showing how to do the painting around feathers anywhere?

pumpkinpatchquilter 12-20-2012 03:58 AM

Thank you all! The painting isn't so hot, hahahaha, but I would like to do some soft paint behind feathers on a quilt and some soft shading on the feathers. I LOVE these!!! I think they definetly take some practice though, I am SO not ready to use them on a "real" project!

Shiva Paintstik's - but I think any brand would work as long as they are oil paint and NOT oil pastels. :)

I'm not sure - but I can tell you all I did was take a soft brush with a little (I mean a very little!) bit of paint on it and rub it around the feathers. For deeper colors use a stiffer brush (usually a stencil brush is recommended).

pollyjvan9 12-20-2012 07:17 AM

I wish I could do feathers like that. I keep trying. Really like the look of the paint sticks.
