K, so ideally, I would have wanted an extra row to make it rectangular, but I'm running out of patience and time, since this is a Christmas gift, and I have yet to do the borders, and put it together (obviously), AND I have a whole other quilt to make for my in-laws (!). So, I think I'm just going to leave it square. There will be an extra 12 inches all around since I'm putting a 4 and a 2 inch border on it, in plain blue and red, so basically it will be about 70" x 70"... that's ok to go on the back of a sofa, right?

Anyway, folks, let me know what you all think of it :) (be nice, I'm still a noob )

I just love Canadian and British words... I'd never hear of a "Noob" before, I've hear of a slag we use to use "Snoob" Looking it up now it has the same meaning, but I like the word Noob much better. How cute it that! I'll have to remember that one!
When I was a noob I sure wish I was as good a new are!
I think your quilt is great, I really like your choice of colors too.

The person you give this to will surely love your work. Some times we are very critical of our own work, but those that know no different won't even notice. It's always so special to receive something hand made and that's made with love too.

Lol! My grandmother was Scottish, and I think I've picked up a lot of little things that I don't even notice! I don't think I've ever said "mom"... I'm almost 27 years old and I stil call my mother "mum" or "mummy"... I know, it's pretty childish, but whatever. I still refer to potatos as "spuds" or "taters", and I haven't ever heard someone use those words around here... :)

And I'm not sure where NOOB comes from, it's short for "newbie", but where if comes from, I'm not sure!

It's pretty!! :D Is it a single, double, or triple? I haven't made one yet.

Where ever your sweet words came from never change! And as for calling your mother, Mum or mamma, don't ever change that either. My mother is going and has been for fourteen years, my aunt is still with us, she is 91 years young and my cousin still calls her Mamma. That just shows love in my eyes. My sister once told my mother she felt she was to old for my mother to kiss her goodbuy, my mother told her she would never be to old for a kiss of love~ She was right!
I have no idea, rereading what I wrote you.... Or where my fingers were going, but it sure wasn't on the right keys... Hope you were able to follow me? ;-) . . . .

You did a great job. If it were me, I would put your Mum's quilt aside and make the other one. Then, if you have the time, add another row to your Mum's quilt, making it a rectangle. I am always sorry that I didn't make my square quilts rectangle, and always end up using them as a table cover rather than a quilt. MHO.....

OK> I"m not much of a "noob" :lol: but I don't know anything about the Irish Chain. Recently, I was just asking someone ifan Irish Chain always came out square. Well, your statement that you would have "wanted an extra row to make it a rectangle" makes me wonder. Is there a "formula" about the number of "rows"? As you can see I am very ignorant on this topic. :oops:

No formula, as far as I know.
Basically I took the two different kinds of blocks, and sewed them together, over and over again so I had a bunch of rectangles that were of two different kinds of blocks. Then I sewed them together with all opposite blocks touching.... does that make sense?
I suppose I could have made it square, rectangle, or really really long and skinny depending on how many rows of each...
