I found her on Craigslist and spent a little of my Christmas money. I think I got a good deal on her. DH doesn't understand the NEED for another machine. (This one makes six-but let's not tell him-Shhh!) I just wanted her because she is so Pretty.

I know she runs but haven't tried sewing with her yet. I think The cord should be replaced - and she needs the little post to hold the thread. And I need a key to the case.

The Singer site says she was made in 1919. It looks like the motor and light have been added. Do you think she might have been a treadle or hand crank first? I don't see a model number. Should there be one somewhere?

She'll need a name......Hmmmm....

She's beautiful, I'm happy that she found a good home.

Shemjo 01-14-2010 04:53 PM

Beautiful! It is a computlsion that I share. I don't think that it was meant to be a treadle, it was meant to be a "portable". Those machines are not light! I have one that needs to be rewired, but I have it put away now. It is just for show, now.

LOL PORTABLE? Are you serious!?! I can hardly lift her. I just weighed her...almost 40 pounds. Glad I don't have to lug this one around! She is just going to be for show with my other antiques. If I need to take a machine along, it will be Elizabeth (my Featherweight) for sure!

WOW - she's pretty. And fancy looking. I think I'd name her "Swanky".

MaryStoaks 01-14-2010 06:01 PM

I have one like it. My 66 redeye came from a garage sale- $15. There was a motor (add-on) that was plainly not good and unsafe wireing. I took off the motor and all wires and put on a hand crank. The handcrank parts were easy to install, came with directions for installation, and if I remember right only cost about $25 (the handcrank parts are reproductions). A gal (Cindy) online sells lots of old Singer parts, she's a regular contributer to the vintage Singer Yahoo group. Very helpful people there. I love the very vintage look of handcranks and all old Singers.

I know nothing about antique sewing machinds but she sure is pretty none the less. Definitely a decorative piece!

barnbum 01-14-2010 07:09 PM

Wow--I had no idea they made them so pretty back then. I think her name is Harriet.

Charlee 01-14-2010 07:29 PM

I think you should name her "Jenny"... Jenny Lind was a *singer* in the 1800's, known as the Swedish Nightengale. :)

Margie 01-14-2010 07:58 PM

She is an American beauty alright...name her Miss America lol

Margie

Ruthie

Ditter43 01-16-2010 08:23 AM

I think Bella would be a fitting name!!! She is indeed beautiful!!
Ditter

Ramona Byrd 01-16-2010 09:19 AM

Of course she should have a name. I think that Susie Singer is nice.
My old Ford Station Wagons were called Fennella Ford and her 2 year
younger sister was Frosty Ford because she didn't like starting on cold
mornings!!

Tadpole 01-16-2010 09:27 AM

Just beautiful! I love the old machines with all the color works on them.

Lostn51 01-16-2010 01:40 PM

I think it looks great and you can tell it was well cared for. Make sure you have all the electricals checked out before plugging the machine in and using it. No need to make yourself a victim if you do not need to be!

Billy

CindyFaye 01-16-2010 03:55 PM

You bet! There is a place under the motor that doesn't look so good. The wire is kind of loose. She will just be on display for awhile. When the weather gets better, I'll haul her into get cleaned and checked out. Thanks for the warning

sewgull 01-17-2010 09:18 AM

She is beautiful addition to your family. I know you will love and cherish her.

Wings 01-17-2010 02:29 PM

She is in wonderful condition, I have two plainer versions of this machine. Also two red eye treadles The decals on yours are beautiful and have lasted well. Do get her rewired - these old dears can be a tad dangerous. From one who knows! If you just want her for antique value then don't interfere with anything on her, but if you want to use her, the hand crank idea is an excellant one, another lady suggested that earlier and I agree with her. Great find, lucky you!!Check out NEEDLEBAR for more info on her :)

tlrnhi 01-17-2010 03:00 PM

She sure is pretty!
Hope you give her a beautiful name

Gerbie 01-20-2010 05:07 PM

I think perhaps "Rose Bud"since she is a Redeye.

mrsmail 01-21-2010 08:51 PM

She is in good shape for her age. The paint looks very good. Must not have been used much. Did you get extra feet with her?
