Guess what? I finally finished the baby quilt wallhanging for the daughter of my friend of 35years and they received it before the birth of the twins!
I put 2 patterns together for this... Heart blocks and Disappearing Nine Patch and added a sweet poem on top. I often did what it said. With trying to downsize all my possessions to prepare for packing due to bankruptcy/home loss, it took me all summer to get this done. It was a fun project and I'm happy with how it turned out. This is fun to have people to show it to who really know how much effort it takes to make a quilt. The backing fabric was provided by a sweet member here. I was so grateful because I didn't have enough for a whole back and would not have been happy with giving a gift that was pieced from my remnants. Thanks for looking, |
Can you post a picture ?
Glad its finished  |

Your quilt is darling. That will be a treasure! :D :D :D

Your quilt is so pretty! Mom, Dad, and the twins will love it. I used to have that saying on something when my kids were babies. For the life of me, I can't remember what it was on. I know I used to read it all the time and I too often did what it said.
(I PM'd you about something else.) Sandy |

Hi everybody, I was out of town with my 88yr old Mom for a couple days and am happy to read your nice comments... thanks!
I wanted to show my friend that despite the disappointing circumstances with her daughter giving birth, I do consider the babies to also bring much joy into the household. Last summer, her daughter had moved back in with them to figure out what to do with her life. In the next few months, she still hadn't found a job when she met the young man, dated a month and become pregnant. So now, my friend is supporting her 23yr old daughter and twins instead of retiring as expected and looks exhausted in the photo. They live in another state from me and her family so none of us can help physically. But I did want her and her daughter to see that somebody recognizes that babies are a happy occasion. Not having time to make 2 whole quilts, I thought I was clever to think of making a wallhanging for the room her daughter and twins share. This was a fun project. The poem was on the wall of my babies' nursery 30years ago, right near my double-wide rocking chair. |
Cute. Great job.

Her is the complete poem I Had 5 children (boys) and my mother gave me a copy.
Song for a Fifth Child by Ruth Hulburt Hamilton Mother, oh Mother, come shake out your cloth, Empty the dustpan, poison the moth, Hang out the washing and butter the bread, Sew on a button and make up a bed. Where is the mother whose house is so shocking? She’s up in the nursery, blissfully rocking. Oh, I’ve grown shiftless as Little Boy Blue (Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo). Dishes are waiting and bills are past due (Pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peekaboo). The shopping’s not done and there’s nothing for stew And out in the yard there’s a hullabaloo But I’m playing Kanga and this is my Roo. Look! Aren’t her eyes the most wonderful hue? (Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo). The cleaning and scrubbing will wait till tomorrow, For children grow up, as I’ve learned to my sorrow. So quiet down, cobwebs. Dust go to sleep. I’m rocking my baby and babies don’t keep. |
Perfect!!! :D

Cathy, your quilt is delightful and I loved the poem you added on it , I am sure your friend and her daughter will cherish it, and the babies grow up in a loving household, in spite of difficult circumstances.
Donna, It was even nicer to be able to read the whole poem, and I'm going to bookmark it. Thank you. |
So so adorable, poem and all. Sure they'll treasure it forever! Great job!!!

I am so sorry to hear about you bankruptcy and home loss. My thoughts are with you. We too have been there... Keep on quilting and giving, it is so healing to be able to give in the midst of loss; it kept my heart intact. Hoping all goes well and your recovery is clear sailing.

The quilt is precious, and the label and poem are great. Yes, I DID rock my babies. Had one that didn't want to be rocked. I would hold him down until he relaxed and "let" me rock him. This was our nursery rhyme and song time.
