Here is a picture of the chenille rug I made yesterday. Was lots of fun and am looking forward to making more.

Looks so cozy and it feels so soft on your feet.

I've never worked with chenille. Is it difficult to keep lines straight?

CajunQuilter2 05-22-2010 10:51 AM

Not at all as I made them. I bought a pattern and you layer 5 pieces then sew lines using a walking foot the width of the foot. Then you cut thru the top three layers. Was really easy and fun.

quiltluvr 05-22-2010 10:57 AM

OK, I'm alittle slow, still getting thru my first Pepsi of the day--- .

So you sew 5 layers together? And cut thru 3? I'm lost. Sorry.

Nettie 05-22-2010 11:01 AM

Cajunquilter2,

did you just use regular cotton fabric for your rug?

Will you put some type of anti skid material under it so it doesn't slide and if so what will use?

Nettie

Yes, you have what they call the bottom and base layer which you put warm and natural in between. Bottom layer face down, base layer face up. Then put 3 layers face up on top of that. Cut the bottom/base layer w/warm and natural an inch larger on each side so that you can distinguish between it and the top 3 layers you cut thru to make the chenille part. i used the same fabric for all 5 fabric layers but you can use different ones if you like.

Love it--like the way the birds still show even after the cutting.

ann clare 05-22-2010 01:26 PM

Your rug is lovely.

dsb38327 05-22-2010 01:41 PM

It is beautiful and hard for me to imagine how you did it. Very nice.

oldswimmer 05-22-2010 02:05 PM

It looks like it has binding on it.. .does it? Was it put on after you cut the chenille?

Yes once you sew all the layers and cut the rows for the chenille you add a binding. Then you wash and dry it.

Love the rugs. Will you put a gripper material underneath if you are putting it on tile or wood flooring? My dogs are so hard on our throw rugs this might be an idea to try. I've done a chenille jacket. I was thinking of trying to stich the rows using my long arm for large pieces or even a scarf.

Yes it would need some sort of gripper material if used on hard wood or tile floors. I am very very careful with that as my grandmother broke her hip when she slipped on one of those braided type slippery rugs so many years ago and suffered the rest of her life with that. She had to have pins put in and over the years they had to come out and she had to walk with crutches the rest of her life. She was 40 when that happened and lived to be 81.

Beautiful rug!! Love the fabric! :D

Sew Pretty! Ladies for a quick & easy tutorial - go to the Moda Bakeshop. There is a lesson (look under recipes) on how to make a chenille potholder, including putting on the binding. It would make a perfect small practice project if you were afraid to start with a rug.

Maksi 05-22-2010 03:31 PM

Great rug!

sewgull 05-22-2010 06:01 PM

What did you use for the base of the rug? You did a good job. I made a chenille rug using 5 layers of different color fabrics, cut thur all 5 layers. It turned out real cute.

knlsmith 05-22-2010 07:10 PM

Very nice. Gonna have to give it a try soon. :) thanks for sharing.

thismomquilts 05-22-2010 07:29 PM

Love this rug. Looks like it'd last a LONG time - Think I'll make some for our house here and some to go in the house when we get to Haiti!

littlehud 05-22-2010 08:28 PM

Beautiful. I need to try that someday. Thanks for the instructions.

craftybear 05-23-2010 07:37 PM

Thanks

Looks great, I have only done small blocks, I should try a rug it would be soft on the feet.

Jingle 05-24-2010 06:48 AM

Looks great, Wal Mart,K-Mart and Target and I'm sure lots of other stores sell the rubber waffle looking stuff that go under rugs to keep them from slipping.

ShowMama 05-25-2010 12:31 PM

CajunQuilter2,

I love your rug and want to try one myself. I understand your directions and they seem easy enough for this old tired brain to manage. But I do have a question that I don't think was addressed. Do you have to stitch and cut in any specific direction? I wasn't sure if it needed to be with the grain, diagonal to it, or what, to make the chenille part look right.
Thanks.

Marjpf 05-25-2010 12:45 PM

Great rug. I've seen the technique but never tried it. Now that I've seen yours, I think I will. Thanks for the inspiration.

CarrieAnne 05-25-2010 12:49 PM

Wow, I love that rug! I bet its so soft!

I just drew my sew line from the top left corner to the bottom right corner. I don't think it makes a difference if you go from top left or top right to the opposite end. Hope this answers your question

Marcia 05-27-2010 02:47 PM

Myrna--what a fun project!! I love it. Did you buy a chenille cutter or did you use scissors?

CajunQuilter2 05-27-2010 03:41 PM

It is a alot of fun to make. I have both the chenille cutter which just zips thru and I have a pair of scissors for cutting chenille. The scissors are a bit harder to use and takes longer but is still fun to do.
