I'm not sure who made them--but they are from my maternal grandmother's side. I wish I knew. Maybe I could ask a cousin to ask an aunt... How should I store them?
Does anyone know it the ones that aren's a Yo-yo have a name? |
While I don't know any of the names, (aside from the Yo-yo) I do know they are beautiful. How wonderful of your father to give them to you.

Those are true treasures. Hope you gave dad some big ole hugs for those!!

hey barn, i just left a message over on the main board. i think the heading is "how do i store old quilts".
these are treasures. very beautiful. you are so lucky to have them. i would certainly try to find out the story of each one. thanks for sharing. |
WOW .. you are a lucky gorl.. thay are so beautiful I would definately try and find out there history....
|
Thanks nana--I'll head over there to read it all.
I admit at first I was wondering what I'd do with old quilts I'm scared to use. But my mom died 10 years ago--Dad remarried quickly--then my mom's mom (grandma) died in 2005, so I get the impression Dad wants things in the right hands...something like that. Like he said--they will make great additions to the quilt shows I do at the assisted living homes. You make me very glad to have them!! :D Now tell me what would you do wth them if they were in your house--as far as display or store? |
Display them on a quilt stand or something of that nature out of direct sunlight and try toavoid heating/ac ducts too. If they get dirty, you might try giving them a good shake and airing them outside in the shade on an old sheet if possible. They were meant to be enjoyed and admired and you are so fortunate to have them! They are beautiful!

The last one is a variation on the ‘Stretched Star’. I know I've seen a pattern for it (aside from the basic) on the net in or in one the books, but just can't recall where.
Here is the basic pattern: http://quilting.about.com/od/quiltpatternsprojects/ss/star_quilt.htm |
Those are gorgeous quilts! I love old quilts like these! What a treasure these are. I think if they were in my house, I would display them for a while or at least one at a time.
|
How lucky you are! I particularly like the last one, the one you call 'triangle quilt.'
if the quilts were mine, they would live in the spare bedroom, on the bed. I'd rotate the one on top. |
barn honey, it is just me, but i use all my old quilts. i have one of my grandmas quilts that i sometimes use on my bed and at night i just fold it and put it on a chair. that way i dont have to wash it. it is important to me to have the old quilts close. the memories they hold are too precious to pack away. if i haven't loved them to pieces my kids can snuggle when it is their turn.
8) 8) 8) THE VIEWS EXPRESSED HERE ARE MINE ALONE AND I KNOW SOME WILL HEARTILY DISAGREE. 8) 8) 8) no quilt police  |

Nana, I totally agree w/you. I have several that are very old, all hand quilted and in good shape. I have used them on small bed in guest room and have some on quilt rack. They have been in washer and dryer, gently done and came out fine. I tell those that I make them for to use them too. :D
|
The top one is a butterfly block . I have some like that , I found in my Mom's cedar chest, she said her mom made them and didn't finish putting them together. So I took them and made a small quilt for my daughter when she was a baby. Elaine

Thanks for the help everyone. I sent pictures to my cousin in NC so she can show them to my aunt.
So far having them makes me think of how much I miss Gram and sharing my quilts with her. Sigh... :( |
Your 3rd one is called birds in the air. I'm just finishing a lap quilt and using a version of that.
|
Ah, that's the variant of the 'slanted star' I was looking for. It makes perfect sense too when you look at the flight going on (flying geese). It's hard to remember all the patterns, I think you could study for years and still not know half of it.
Combined 'em then, check out this link as well as the star link above: http://www.commonthreadsohio.org/Exchanges/birdsInAir.htm I know I've seen the full pattern somewhere but well, the old gray cells they ain't what they use to be. |
What treasures!
