I did a simplified storm at sea for my dad's Christmas gift, it's simplified in that I cheated and made it half the size it was originally going to be because I've run out of time!!!
I think I'm going to buy some more red to do a solid border all the way around, and that will be the end of it, I'm so sick of working on this one!! My basement is litterally covered in little scraps that I have to sweep up and put in the garbage, I haven't the time or the patience to sort through and keep scraps.

I have this awesome red orange and yellow guitar print flannel for the backing... I just have to find it. I realize I have exactly two days to finish this thing quilted and everything. I HATE waiting till the last minute!

This is a beautiful pattern, one I have wanted to try, but haven't found time yet. I have heard it is a difficult (or frustrating) pattern to do. Is it because of matching all the points, or what makes it frustrating??

Beatiful quilt and work, by the way!!!!!

Baren*eh*ked_canadian 12-22-2009 08:49 AM

It wasn't hard, I did it using paper piecing. It's just long, that's all.

Quilt4u 12-22-2009 09:01 AM

Very nice.

Tippy 12-22-2009 09:54 AM

Oh my!! I LOVE that.. where can I find the pattern?

jljack 12-22-2009 09:56 AM

Really lovely...I know your dad will treasure it.

Bobbinwinder 12-22-2009 10:04 AM

Lookin' good! Sew now, sweep later... good luck meeting your deadline!

Shemjo 12-22-2009 10:26 AM

I love your variation! Which colors are truer to the real thing? Good luck on getting it all done for Christmas! I have a bunch of stuff like that, too! And here I am on line! Grrr.

Baren*eh*ked_canadian 12-22-2009 10:37 AM

The colours on the second pic are truer to real life.

Thanks everyone! I'm going to buy the border fabric and the batting at work today, which reminds me, I'm running late! Gotta go!

That's beautiful! I attempted to make this pattern and got it off of quilterscache. I didn't realize that one of the paper pieced pattern pages didn't print out at 100%. I had to put a hold on it but it is still on my list!

Baren*eh*ked_canadian 12-22-2009 10:51 AM

I figured out my own pattern, I drew it up in the exact size I wanted and measured everything to the millimeter so it did work out perfectly. I'm sure there are other places you can get the pp pattern templates for this... I didn 't really look for them, I just figured it out on my own.

Esqmommy 12-22-2009 11:07 AM

Wow Mel, that's wonderful! good luck getting it done on time, and Merry Christmas!!

You did a great job. I understand that is a difficult pattern. I hope your Dad really appreciates your work.

wesing 12-23-2009 03:19 PM

Very nice! This is probably my favorite pattern - I want to make one someday, but it is still way down the list. Thanks for posting inspiration for the rest of us!

Ok, it's officially finished!!!
I worked late last night and got up early this morning to finish it, it's nearly noon and I still have shopping to do and wrapping too...*sigh*

ranger 12-24-2009 10:00 AM

What a great gift for your Dad. He'll love it.

Sarah CA 12-24-2009 10:05 AM

Wow, it is absolutely beautiful!! I know you designed the pattern to your own specifications, but where could I just buy the pattern? Does anyone know by chance? I could never do it on my own without a specific pattern. I am so impressed....Great job and very luck Dad. My Dad passed away a couple years ago, but if he was still here, I would definitely make this one for him. He was a professional fisherman, so "Storm at Sea' would have been very appropriate.
Thanks everyone, for all your sharing and help.

I have no idea where you could buy the pattern but there are a bunch of places online where you can just get the templates and instructions for free :) Just google storm at sea quilt pattern, or instructions of something :p
