I put the borders on tonight after much thought about what or how I wanted to do it. The top is finally done. I am really afraid to finish it now.....lol I don't even know how. I would LOVE to free motion it but I have never even quilted before let alone free motion......

it's beautiful! first, what kind of sewing machine are you using? you can do FMQ on just about any machine but it makes a difference if we know a few things:

can you drop the feed dogs?
does it have auto adjusting tension or just a manual dial?
do you have a darning foot, the kind that's on a spring and hops?

You can make yourself some muslin quilt "sandwiches" about 12 x 12 to practice on. If you look at the red arrow, the one on the right is where I started and the one on the left is where I ended. Really it's just one huge continuous line that does not cross itself. It takes some time to figure out how your machine wants to do FMQ. Keep a notebook next to you to make notes on what tension, which needle, stuff like that. Loop-de-loops are fun too and soon you'll be making leaves and feathers and hearts and whatever you want :) it really is like doodling.

What I do when I quilt at home, is tape my backing to the floor, nice and taught. Then use some adhesive spray (I use 505) and lay my batting on top. Then spray the batting and lay my quilt top on top of the batting.

Starting in the middle, I smooth it out and then I pin, pin, pin. I don't get bunches in the fabric underneath this way.

I would just stitch in the ditch...
up one seam and down the other...

you doing great....Just keep going..Don't be afraid..The free motion is not so difficult.....You don't need to make a perfect job...Your daughter will love it anyway... :D

I just have a regular little singer sewing machine...... They have a plate I can use to cover the feed dogs. Also, it has a manual dial to adjust the tension. It's just a regular machine and that is about all I can handle.....lol

My advice is what I learned on here--practice, practice, practice. I started on little things, practice muslin sandwiches to potholders, to small wall hangings. Stippling is weird for me--sometimes it comes out awesome, the next time it doesn't. I think following a pattern on the quilt would be easier for me! :D

Loop do loops work better for me, too.
