This is Joey's first pieced project. You may remember he is nuts over my EQ and I posted two threads of his designs. He is 12 and a budding quilt designer.

Last summer he made a doll quilt for the Kids' Doll Quilt swap and he used my Confusion technique.(crazy quilting). But he didn't have to learn to do straight seams so this time he had to learn some basics.

Well today he wanted to make a pillow for his mom. so he did his first HSTs and made 4 into a quilt block. Today was the first time he used my new Brother and he got used to it really quickly. He loved all the differant stitches it can do.
He learned to make HSTs Grandma Rhonda's way and he did it all on his own with me just talking him through it.
He was a little nervous of the speed of the machine but after some play using copy paper and then about 4 practice runs on fabric he had a feel for the machine.

I heard statements like Quilting is in my BLOOD! and Sewing machines are addictive man!!! LOL

He played on my sewing machine all afternoon and never got bored. This from a kid with ADHD and a brain that never stops ticking and searching for new things. He has the attention span of a gnat some days. But he was enthralled with sewing. When I insisted he take a break because I had to deal with his brother or other things and couldn't tell him what to do next he didn't want to stop.

He went on to make a bookmark from two pieces of fabric after he was done with the pillow. He loved it!

Another one is addicted to quilting!!! He is thinking he will be a scientist with a quilting addiction!!

Rachel(his sister 8) came just before supper and she wanted to stuff something when Joey was stuffing his pillow. So I sewed up a heart and let her stuff that. She had fun with it.

This was a fabric I received recently from a dear friend. Here Joey chose to use it for the back of his pillow

This is the front of his pillow. He was so proud of himself!!

pamkasperi 01-22-2011 11:14 PM

That is so wonderful you have the patience for that...I've always used my sewing "to get away" from the noise and chaos of 5 kids....it just dawned on me that my girls really don't know how to sew!

Joey did great on his points!

Lacelady 01-23-2011 03:13 AM

Rhonda, Joey made a great job of his pillow - the points would put some quilters to shame, and this is his first! Please tell him well done from me.

CraftsByRobin 01-23-2011 03:28 AM

Wow ... he's doing better at quilting than I am ... great job!

leatheflea 01-23-2011 05:01 AM

Great job! My DGD made herself a headband from a jelly roll strip; her own idea. Looks like today we are just hanging out.

Laura22 01-23-2011 06:17 AM

Wow, he did great on that pillow :)

Donna Mare 01-23-2011 06:23 AM

Great Rhonda

He is doing so well. I enjoyed the expressions when he was at the machine. Total concentration! She is on her way too.

DawnMarie 01-23-2011 06:33 AM

Isn't it so fun to see the enthusiasm kids have for sewing? I love it! He did a great job!

clem55 01-23-2011 06:34 AM

what great kids! Joey is really talented, and to be so interested at his age surely speaks well of you, and of his future developement as a designer and quilter. I know how proud you must be. Little Sis will start trying real hard too, just to try to outdo him.LOL!

TeresaT 01-23-2011 06:39 AM

How wonderful. Tell him to keep up the good job.

amma 01-23-2011 04:10 PM

Way to go Joey!! :D:D:D

Rhonda 01-23-2011 04:33 PM

My daughter always wanted to do what I do even when I first started. She was 5 when I started and she tried and tried many times over the years. She just didn't inherit the quilting gene! LOL But Joey is her son and he has certainly been bitten by the bug. She's 35 now and when she saw his pillow she gave me a look. She's always wanted to and now here her son is doing it instead! She is artistic in other ways. She draws and paints and crochets.

rootyr 01-23-2011 04:35 PM

Wow,he is good!
You go Rachel!

BizzieLizzie 01-25-2011 03:35 PM

What talented budding quilters! Good to know that there are children so gifted with using their hands and have vision to do so well. Well done!

buckeyed 01-25-2011 03:50 PM
