My Empty Spools Project

2 Attachment(s)
In March I went to Empty Spools at Asilomar for the first time and attended the workshop taught by Meri Henriques Vahl. I was so far out of my comfort zone I might as well have been on a different planet. I chose a print by Will Moses (the grandson of Grandma Moses) to use as inspiration. My husband and I had purchased the print while on a vacation in New England several decades ago. I finished most of the little quilt during the workshop, but modified it slightly and quilted it after I returned home.

I learned new techniques and had a nice time meeting other quilters at the retreat.

That is very cool. It is nice to learn new techniques as well as meet other quilters. Glad your retreat was such a success.

Lovely work! Not likely now that I will ever get there, but over the years I have looked at their classes with interest.

That's so nice, Dunster. I would have been totally out of my comfort zone on that project too.

It's been a totally bad week for us, and my brain is in low gear this morning, but I'm not understanding the "empty spools"...what did empty spoons have to do witht your applique project??

That turned out awesome. It looks so labor intensive that it would take a year to make it that detailed. I love your quilting designs, too.

Empty Spools is a quilting seminar that runs every year at the Asilomar conference grounds on the California coast. The sessions run for 6 days. There are 8 or more very well known quilters teaching workshops at each session. Meals and lodging are provided, though I think there's also an option to stay off the grounds. You usually work on a single project during your stay.
