My First Quilt
1 Attachment(s)
After looking through my back issues of quilting mags, I thought this one would be a good first project;
http://www.mccallsquilting.com/mccal..._Quilt_Pattern I went by the fabric store and picked up some fat quarters.....which I realized would only give me 1-2 squares when I need up to 8 for some...guess I'll be going shopping again. Anyways, here are the quarters I did pick up; |
I love the colors!

That is going to be so pretty!

Your FQs are pretty. I wonder, though, whether the pattern you've selected is FQ-friendly (in other words, is there a lot of waste when using FQ's for it)? I can't tell from the picture. The other thing to consider is that the description says it's for a confident beginner. In quilt-speak, that usually means it's not recommended for your first quilt, unless you're already an accomplished seamstress. I don't want to discourage you - far, far from it - but (without knowing what your skill level is, or whether you have access to friends who can help and encourage you) I would recommend a pattern that's made up of squares and rectangles to start with. Yellow Brick Road (YBR) is a good choice. Whatever you make, please show us when it's done! And welcome to the quilting community.

Love your fabrics - with fat quarters I always over buy. They can easily be returned or kept for stash. Gonna be a very nice quilt!

You will do fine....... if you can read, you can do. Just remember to re-square your blocks before assembling your top. Have FUN!!!!

This is going to be really cool. Love your bright choices in fabric. Very fresh and fun.
I want to add that I also made this pattern to use up some of my stash. I added sashing and corners to mine just to use up fabric. This is a quick and fun pattern to do. Works up fast into a big quilt. Here is a view of mine. Still needs quilting. You will love making this pattern. |
Like those fabrics. It's going to be a very pretty quilt. Show us pictures when it's done.

You can do it! I'm a newbie and I would definitely try my hand at this pattern! We are here to help if you get stuck.
Go for it! |
Love your fabrics!!!!

Cute fabrics!

It's mostly big half square triangles. Just find a method of making those that works for you and give it a whirl. Remember to be patient. Speedy only leads to ripping seams. This I know. :)

Nice choice of fabrics.

be sure to show finished result

Hi again. Understanding that you are a beginner, I want to say not to be afraid of this pattern. Yes it does have what is called bias edges which can stretch if not handled gently. Not to fear this!
Starch the fabric twice. Spray and let it soak in, press it and then do it again. I like to starch on the back of the fabric. Do some trial blocks before you cut the entire quilt. When you press the block open do it from the top side and gentlylift the edge of the fabric and get the tip of the iron close to the seam and just let it flip open as you press. You can find video tutorials on this. Follow the instructions and if you have ? the QB is right here to help and I have the pattern so I can maybe help. The bias edge shouldn't be a problem cause they are sewn before they are cut so they will be stable. Sew slow and don't pull the fabric. Go for it with no fear. You have to start somewhere and this is a good place to jump in! Remember it is just fabric. peace |
Great choice of colors. Good luck.
