What a cool gift!! :-)

Looks so pretty , lucky niece, I want to make one..........I like the colors you use :D
I love it! Are the fabrics regular cotton or flannel? Most of the rag quilts I have seen are flannel or denim. How many layers of fabric did you use?
Barb C. |
barb, the fabric is 100% cotton. All found at walmart. I used a med weight flannel cotton for the middle. All cut the same size. 7" without stitching an x in each squares, as it was not needed. I used a 1/2 seam allowance. I just love this quilt. i'm very fond of bright colors.( the back and the front layers are the same with a flannel insert, only fringed on the front.
someone had mention about fringe on both sides but I would think this would be unconforatable to the touch of your skin. |
I love your choice of colors. It looks very comfy. I still have not started mine.

I really like this pattern. I have been wanting to make a quilt with "Rag Flowers" and this is perfect. Thank you for sharing!
beautiful! I have wanted to make one of these for a while. I hope mine turns out as nice when I do get to make it! :D
I agree!! It is wonderful...I toolike nice and bright...how fun!

Catherine-- did you wash your quilt in a regular washing machine? and if so.. it is a front loading machine or the regular ole top loader? A friend who makes rag quilts said she washed one in a regular machine (for the 1st wash) and it clogged up the plumbing. She suggested taking it to a laundromat for the first run. Just wondering what you did and if you had any troubles.

I read the same note about clogging up her machine and I WAS afraid
at first. My washer is a top loader and yep...washed it twice on regular cycle..dryed twice..clean vent on dryer each time, but not much lint and it did just fine, no different than any other load of wash. |
how many layers of the flannel did you use? I'm wanting to try my hand at this also. I think that yours turned out great.
I did a jean quilt and I washed and dried it several times, just empty your lint filters. No other problems
I used a med weight flannel cotton..one layer. I found it at wal-mart. It worked perfect!
Great color combo. Love the fish!

Love your quilt. I've made rag quilts from the Simplicity pattern#4993, they are shaped like a cat, dog & bear. It said to use cotton batting, which I have done, but I like your idea of the med. weight flannel better, because you could cut everything out at once. When I use the batting, I have to cut the batting smaller than the main pieces, which takes a lot of time. Plus, I'm sure that the flannel would be alot cheaper to make. Thanks for the info.

Barb C I clogged up a washer once with a rag vest, I always take my "rag" creations to the laudery mat. DD |
DD, probably the safest way to wash a rag quilt. This first one gave me no trouble.....I hope my niece won't have any trouble when she washes it!!! A good gift could turn into a nightmare!!
I agree, very nice and thanks for sharing. I'm inspired to try one this year also for a gift.
I think it will shed only down to the seams. After a couple washings it should be fine. Like old blue jeans. :-)
Your rag quilt is beautiful. I have had the fabric for a quilt for several weeks, but not found the time to start it. You are an inspiration! I am leaving work early today to get started.
Now that's a quilt-a-holic if ever....!
I know,, I'm sitting here with a pile of fabric and a dirty house. I quilted all day yesterday and want to today also. Oh well I think the house will keep another day.   |
I would rather quilt than even Think about house work, and I do, in fact I'ld rather do anything besides housework. I'm glad I had boys, even tho they are grown and gone, we now have two exchage students living with us this year..boys, thank goodness, as long as they can get to the fridge, their beds and the TV set, they are happy ...they even tell me not to worry about it, that it would just get dirty, again!!! I love them! ha
If you had girls they would eventually get tired of the mess and clean it for you.! Mine did!
Love the bright colors...Very Nice!!!!!!!!! :)
I am an empty nester and my husband ould let the roof cave in before he noticed it. My kids weren't very worried about the dirt either, but every now and then I feel the need to "shovel" it out and really hate that it takes me away form the sewing machine.
My hubby only complains if he has no clean socks and underwear, or he stubbs his toe on something. Or if his dinner is more than 5 min away  When I want to get him out of my hair I casually suggest we do some kind of household project. That seems to be some type of secret code, meaning he should go out side and re-arrange his tool shed. This task generally requires most of the day!

Ha ha these are all so funny!!! Those husbands!!!!! My husband cooks half of the time, and I do believe he thinks that equals us out in housework. That part I just don't understand, since he gets every pot and pan dirty, along with the whole entire kitchen. I think it is beyound him to grasp the idea that you CAN clean while you cook! This is eating into my sewing time!
So true! So true! Lets get back to work ladies. Man your machines
You know, I just love this! Great tips, gorgeous pictures and lots of laughs. It doesn't get much better than this!
Very nice! I am going to start one myself and hope it comes together as well as yours has.
the quilt looks nice and soft
