Wow that's some stunning fabric! LOVE it!!! Are you planning to nest these all together like a one block wonder or put plain fabric between them? I'm only asking because I see that you've sewn rather than pinned your two halves together...

belmer 02-11-2010 10:26 AM

Wow..... very colorful.

Sheree from Chicago 02-11-2010 10:26 AM

It's going to be gorgeous! Great choice of fabrics. Love "the mod". I haven't done a stack & wack yet but on the agenda! Can't wait to see more! Hugs, Sheree

martha jo 02-11-2010 11:06 AM

I have done Stack and Whack and am currently doing OBW.. You do cut them out in a similiar way but they go together differently.

bstanbro 02-11-2010 11:16 AM

Love those bright colors!

Sharon - NC 02-11-2010 11:34 AM

I'll be honest. I hate the original fabric. But I LOVE the blocks you made with it. Who'd a-thunk it?? :-)

I've been working on an couple of other projects but here are all of the ones I've made so far. All will be placed on black fabric with some space between them, details figured out later.

Hang on, I think I have to add a pic.....

Feathers 02-11-2010 12:47 PM

I LOVE Stack and Whack and your blocks are gorgeous. Can't wait to see pictures of the completed quilt. Thanks for sharing.

Phyl 02-11-2010 02:09 PM

I LOVE IT ALL!!! The original fabric is sensational and you can see the possibilities are endless! I took an on-line course with Bethany from Quilt University for the stack and wack. My fabric is gorgeous but I actually chickened out when it came to cutting it!! It would have been my FIRST so I was scared! (Still am.)
I think I will go over the notes again and MAYBE attempt it but I do want to find someone who can stand right next to me while I set it up! Yours is GORGEOUS> I want to do the "wheels" on the front and the original fabric on the back. Sigh...........ready? set? ....procrastinate!!!!

wvdek 02-11-2010 02:32 PM

Tee Hee. I opened this topic and said, "Wowee, lookee this" to my DD coming towards me and DH behind me about 10 feet said, "wow, I can even see that from here!".

These are sure cool. Another SW to amaze us. That fabric is a hoot.

Sarah CA 02-11-2010 08:30 PM

What is the diffeerence between a OBW and a Stack and Wack?
Thanks,
Sarah in CA

oh, my! it is scrumptious!
I have always been attracted to the fabric you started with, and I have never figured it out, since I am not scandinavian or anything like that! LOL But, having seen your samples, I will now purchase them with ABANDON! <g> <wave>

zz-pd 02-11-2010 09:53 PM

just love it.

Quilter2B 02-11-2010 10:27 PM

WOW . Amazing and beautiful.

quiltswithdogs 02-11-2010 10:44 PM

Is Stack and Whack the same as kaleidoscope? It looks like it.
I love your wonderfully vibrant fabric.

k3n 02-12-2010 01:27 AM

Stack n whack refers to the way the fabric is cut - you stack up your repeats (6 for a hexagon) and 'whack' out the shapes - here they are equilateral triangles. This term was coined (I think) by Bethany Reynolds who wrote 'Stacknwhackipedia'.

Kaleidoscope refers to the effect the block creates, this effect can be created by octogans, stars, strips, fans and any other number of shapes.

An OBW or One Block Wonder refers specifically to the technique developed by Maxine Rosenthal (books of the same name) where you layout your hexagon (or octogan) blocks so they all butt up against each other to create an allover effect - this is about the whole quilt rather than each individual block. With this technique, you sew the blocks in halves then pin them together while you do the layout. Then you join them in rows so NO dreaded Y seams!

Hope that's clearer than mud!

For more information on OBWs, stack n whack and kaleidoscopes, check out the Virtual Section by clicking on the link in blue at the bottom left of this page. :-D

I LOVE LOVE LOVE your fabric-perfect for S and W. And your quilt is going to be gorgeous-I love your blocks, so far.

Overlander 02-12-2010 08:45 AM

Aren't they fun? I love this style of quilt, so many, many different looks from one piece of fabric. It's going to be beautiful.

jjtripletmom 02-12-2010 12:02 PM

Now since I know the difference between OBW's and stack and wacks, which is easier and why. I would love to make a quilt like this.

Sarah CA 02-12-2010 12:11 PM

Yes, I would like to know the same thing. Also, if doing the OBW as a hexagon, for instance, is there a template you use?
Thanks, Sarah in CA

Do you have a source for your fabric. Have looked on internet unsuccessfully. Your quilt is going to be gorgeous.

sew_lulu 02-12-2010 02:39 PM

I love it. It's absolutely beautiful. i have the book but haven't got around to it. Hopefully soon. I'm nervous picking out the fabric. Not sure what I should be looking for.

Sarah CA 02-12-2010 02:49 PM

I missed the name of the book. Could you let me know. Thanks s much.

It will be stunning when it's finished. I plan to try one of those this year.

Bethany Reynolds has 3? books out for the Stack n Whack process. Get her first one. She explains everything in there and it is really simple to do. Oh yeah, the pinwheel one was my first quilt ever. It is still my most favorite pattern to do.

Nonna Judi 02-12-2010 06:50 PM

What a happy fabric. I will look forward to seeing your progress. This is definitely on my to do list!

Brenda Retzlaff 02-14-2010 08:34 AM

Oh my goodness...it's so beautiful!

Thanks! I'm going to put a design wall up this afternoon so I can figure out where to put each one. Will probably make myself nuts! :)

quilterjeri 02-14-2010 09:19 PM

I, too, love making stack-n-whack quilts, and have made over 20 of them! I teach classes on how to do it. Have been making them since Bethany Reynolds' first book came out "Magic Stack-n-Whack"; unfortunately, I have given most of them away and don't have pics of them. I do love your choice of fabric. When in fabric shops, the fabrics good for S&W seem to jump off the shelf at me, so I have plenty of fabrics just waiting to be stacked and whacked! Keep up the good work.

MissTreated 02-14-2010 09:24 PM

Ooh! Great fabric choice! It's gonna be awesome!

Double dittoes! Looks great!

marla 02-17-2010 11:32 AM

Love it! I want to do one. Thanks for sharing as you have given me ideas for selecting fabric. I've been begging my qilt shop to have a class on stack and wack. I will try it on my own.

If you go here http://www.quiltingboard.com/virtual...jsp?vsnum=1006 you can find a few threads where ppl are discussing fabric, cutting, assembly etc... You'd need the book too but this is a great extra helping hand! :-D Look for the threads posted by Cutebuns. ;)

Well, here is the wall hanging size. It looks better in person, it didn't photograph that well and I'm feeling a bit lazy, so this is it......

Anyone got ideas for a border for this? I'm thinking a red piece and then black on the outside.....but open to suggestions!
