My Grand Illusion top is almost done

I finally got the top almost finished. I need to add a final border before I can quilt it. This one is going to be a keeper for me:D Should I add a thin black border ad then perhaps a pink final solid border?
Thank you all so much for looking and continued inspiration!

I also attached a donation quilt that I finished with left over blocks from my DGN quilt.

Both are beautiful! Yes, I agree, thin black border would look nice.

soozieQ 06-05-2015 04:33 AM

I would go for just a thin black border. I have made this with a few changes but haven't quilted yet

Tartan 06-05-2015 04:52 AM

I like the idea of a thin black border and then choose one of the colour a from the quilt for a border. Match it to the room it is going in. The big block quilt is great also!

dunster 06-05-2015 05:31 AM

I really like the black sashings you've added to that quilt. It gives the impression of beautiful stained glass or elaborate tile work. Can you post more pictures? It's just beautiful. The donation quilt - and the quilting on it! - are also beautiful.

Very nice, think I'd do just a thin black border.

Sorry for duplicating this but no matter how hard I tried I couldn't figure out how to add more pictures to my original post. Dunster asked for some more photo's :) I am so glad she did I found an oops on a section just before the pink cornerstone and because of her I only have a little bit of ribbing , yahoo! Thank you Dunster!
By the way the quilt measures 77" wide and 109" long, plenty to cover the pillows.

I think that your narrow black border treatment makes this quilt beautiful. I may never get mine done, but there is always hope and if I get that far, I will "borrow" your idea to make mine half-way beautiful too.

Awesome quilts. I like the idea of the thin black border as well. I would only add the pink border if you need it for size.

twinkie 06-06-2015 04:54 AM

That is a gorgeous quilt. Lots of work.

I agree... love the black.

I have that on my ever growing list LOL Yours came out lovely. Just got back from Mackinac Island and the colors are a true representation of the colors used at the Grand Hotel.

The quilting on your donation quilt is spectacular.

Fastpedal 06-06-2015 06:01 AM

Beautiful, beautiful quilt. Love the colors. I would put a small black border and then add a larger border of the black print so your colors in the quilt pop. The size of the border would depend on what size you need your finished quilt to be. Seventy-nine inches wide is not a very wide quilt in relation to the length of it.

annette1952 06-06-2015 06:27 AM

Both quilts are awesome! Great job

redquilter 06-06-2015 07:07 AM

Gorgeous! I really love it. IMHO I think a simple, thin black border is all that you need.

lynnie 06-06-2015 08:40 AM

definitely a thin black border.
the the intense quilting on the donation quilt

I agree with Faspedal. Love the black border.

Nice quilts.

KristenJ 06-06-2015 06:31 PM

I love how these quilts came out! It does look very difficult to a newbie like me though. I'm just now getting used to making HST. LOL....Your quilt is just beautiful!

grammysharon 06-06-2015 10:32 PM

Love both, thin black border only.

ruby2shoes 06-07-2015 02:08 AM

Back border...not necessarily thin though as I think the border needs to be a different size to the sashing so it will frame and balance the quilt. Then a contrast binding of one of the colours in the body of the quilt.

southernmema 06-07-2015 09:20 AM

I must admit that some of the Grand Illusions are a bit busy for my taste, but yours and the way you bordered each block is absolutely stunning! Great job!

oldquilter 06-07-2015 10:44 AM

Great looking quilt. Think it would benefit from the narrow black border.

tuckyquilter 06-07-2015 11:37 AM

Great Quilt. My GIMQ is also staying with me. I have very few in my home. Mostly sew charity quilts from scraps. So Bonnie Hunter is right up my alley.

Annz 06-07-2015 12:36 PM

Yea I thini a thin black would be nice. the pink might also be nice. It looks great.

javin22 06-07-2015 03:43 PM

Wow! Nice job!

Jingle 06-08-2015 06:19 AM

Both are beautiful.

red-warrior 06-08-2015 04:23 PM

I love both quilts!

nannyrick 06-08-2015 04:34 PM

That is stunning. I love it.

mjhaess 06-14-2015 09:21 AM

Very pretty...

fred singer 06-14-2015 10:25 AM

wonderful quilt

ManiacQuilter2 06-14-2015 10:27 AM

I would just add black binding unless you need borders for some extra length and width.
