Working on another horse and one more waiting in the wings. This one had a rather large piece that I wanted to do with very lightweight fusible. Because there will be quite a number of pieces on top of this one I used Misty Fuse which is very lightweight.

The piece was traced onto parchment paper and sandwiched with

iron the sandwich together protecting both the iron and ironing board

The rest of the pieces ready to go on top.

No way. I can trace and that is about it. This is another Toni Whitney pattern. She is a painter who is now designing quilts. I love her stuff. I enlarge her patterns so I can satin stitch all the edges down. Trace the pieces to fusible, I usually use Wonder Under because it is cheaper. Fuse the pieces to the back of the fabric and cut them out. Then peel off the paper, put the enlarged pattern under parchment paper and put the pieces into place ironing them down as I go. If you can trace you can do it. The pattern now has a strip with the fabric colors and lists the name of each fabric so you can copy her colors.

Couldn't wait so I cut it out, peeled off the parchment and put it onto more parchment so it wouldn't stick to the ironing board. the piece I peeled off will be a placement guide for those pieces going on top of the new piece. assembled, but still need a few more pieces to finish up. Almost ready for stitching.

large piece placed on top of the parchment on top of the pattern

peeled off piece on top as a guide for eye placement etc.

still a few pieces to get in then trim and ready for stitching

Are you assembling the horse before putting it on the final background? When you satin stitch the edges do you match the thread color to the fabric or are you using some sort of invisible thread?

It is looking awesome and I hope you are going to post more pictures as you progress!!!

Yes it is assembled or fused together on the parchment paper with the pattern underneath for placement. I use Mettler and match the thread. I can either satin stitch it to the stiffener and then put it onto a background or I can satin stitch directly to the background. Depends on the size and complexity. This one is pretty simple so I'll do it to a background then build the rest of the quilt.

I go to a local printer who can print 36 inch wide pieces. Then I tape the two or three parts together.

BrandyMcCoy 05-25-2011 02:51 PM

gorgeous! Looks so amazing!!!

Sorry no the paper does not stay in. I took off the smaller pieces which had been fused together on the paper then put them back in place on top of the big piece. So I had the pattern covered by the parchment paper covered by the large piece covered by the small pieces . Fuse them all down and they can be peeled off the paper and ready to stitch.
