My Lap Quilt!
2 Attachment(s)
I just finished this mini-quilt, it's for my friend's birthday coming up (She's turning 16.) I am super excited to give it to her! This is the third mini-quilt (and third quilt overall) that I have. I feel like there is something I should add to the borders, like more quilting or something. My mom suggested knot-tying the border, and I think that might be cute but I don't know. There is a whole lot of mistakes, and the fabric is cheap from Walmart, but I'm still proud of it :)
She will treasure it!!!
I love this fabric, and as far as quilting just try something you like. That's how we learn new things.
Thank you maryb119 :)
Thank you Grace!! I loved the fabric too. I got a pack of fat quarters and thought it was the prettiest option, I loved the bright colors and flowers, I think it's a good fabric for a teenage girl. :)
Very nice work. Walmart does have some nice quality fabrics now. Your friend will surely love this quilt. Keep up the work
Oh my what a lovely quilt for your freind's birthday, she will be so pleased. Your colors are great!!!
Congratulations on completely your quilt!
Very nice finish!
Lovely little quilt...very brave to use the decorative stitch at the edge! You will find the more you sew the better you will become. Keep at least one of these "first" quilts for yourself. it will become a reminder of how much you have improved as you gain experience. I have one little quilt I love to look at...it's full of wonky pieces, but it show how far I have come in my miniature sewing.
I love the decorative stitch on the binding. I think you did a fine job and your friend will love it.
I think you did a wonderful job and I'm sure your friend will treasure it. Please don't worry about wonkiness and such, as your experience grows, the mistakes will be fewer.
This is a wonderful quilt! Your friend will love it!

If the batting is caught in the outside stitching you might not need more stitching in the border. How wide is the border.
You could do a more open decorative stitch down the center of the border to really make sure it will stand the test of time of many washings and use. Great job on this thoughtful gift. |
like farmquilter suggested a decorative stitch. How about in a serpentine style
down the middle. I did that to a wall hanging I made for a quilter that had pockets bc I thought the border needed more stability. I think this quilt is darling and she's going to like it. :) |
You are off to a great start! Enjoy every minute of the process and you will be turning out lots of great quilts in no time!
It's very pretty! I wouldn't knot tie the borders, since the rest is machine quilted, I would continue with machine quilting in the borders. You could always use the same or another decorative stitch in the borders. If you don't want to do anything as labor intensive as crosshatching (which would reflect the X's stitched in the blocks), a wavy stitch down the middle will do.
If it is possible, try to keep you first quilt close in the family. Years from now it will be a priceless treasure for you. You have done a great job and I look forward to seeing more of your quilts.
I'm so proud of you for picking up this craft and continuing the quilting legacy. Thank you. I can't wait to see where u go next.
Great job on your quilt. Your friend will love it.
Cute cute!
What fun! Do keep at least one of your early works/make something for yourself.
I've spent a lot of years quilting for other people. My own quilts were getting pretty ratty and I realized that I deserved quilt gifts too! So while I am still doing little quilts for others, right now most of what I'm making big is for me. |
I think you did a great job on your mini quilt and your friend is going to treasure it.
Nice job, border color is great choice to allow the center to be the focus. Your friend will be very happy to receive your gift 😀

Great beginners quilt. I agree that the border needs more quilting. You could quilt “X” by continuing your “X’s” that you have quilted in the piecing area (body of the quilt). That would be cute and still do-able even though you have finished the edges already. Take care though—-there could be puckering because the outer edge is sewn down and any excess (puffiness) has nowhere to go. It can be worked in though. Also I would not tie the borders. It might be cute but typically tied quilts are tied everywhere, not just in the border. I hope you repost when you decide how you want to finish the borders. PS. I would have loved to have had a friend make a quilt for me!!! |
Such a thoughtful person you are! Your friend should be delighted with your gift.

That is very cute. It’s a very thoughtful gift for your friend. Hope you continue making quilts. I like the idea of a serpentine stitch through the middle of the border.
What a cute quilt! Your friend will like it! I wouldn’t do anything in the border. I like it the way it is with the decorative edging. Amelia Marie, do not knock your quilting. You are learning a wonderful hobby. You really did a nice job for your 3rd quilt!
Your friend will be so pleased. Nice job.
Very pretty quilt.
I hope you make one for yourself too. Your friend will love the one you have made her. I feel like you will get much better, because you have tried several things and also, your seams really meet. Good!
Sweet quilt. Since you've already quilted around the edge, keep the quilting and no tying on this one. Your friend is going to love this. Whatever you do, don't point out the "mistakes." She won't know! Nice work!
Very nice quilt and your friend will be thrilled to have something made by you! Keep on quilting!
Your friend will love it because it comes from your heart. Lovely. BrendaK

I think it's an adorable quilt. I'm sure your friend will love it and treasure it forever because you made it especially for her.
Great job! I love the decorative machine stitches. I just don't have the patience for them!!!
I love how your quilt turned out & really like the fabric you selected. Your friend is going to love getting it from you. Don't you worry about the mistakes....everyone has a whole lot in their first quilts but as time goes by & you learn more you will find that you are making less mistakes. I have to suggest that you never point out your mistakes to anyone. If you are gifting quilts, the one who receives it will never notice them & will be so happy to get something from you that you made with love. Also, after a quilt is washed a lot of those mistakes will never, never be noticed.
Thanks for sharing pictures of your first quilt. It's a real beauty & your on your way to a great, rewarding hobby. |
