Hi guys. I read the boards all of the time, and have never posted. I just finished this thing, which is huge. It is a black and white trip around to world. It is a king size, and as you can tell, it takes up the biggest part of my biggest floor space. I need to baste it next. Any suggestions on where to go or what to do to get enough room to do this? Thanks.

Clear the decks, that is very pretty! Nice work! I'm sure you'll enhance it even more!

Farmer Girl 03-03-2008 06:54 PM

That is one beautiful quilt! Try your local library, lots of times they have a meeting room where the tables can all be pushed together. Our church does a day every month, where the women's groups get together in the hall and we can baste to our heart's content.

Could you take it apart and make maybe 3 or 4 parts and then quilt and reattach. It would be less bulky. I did one and quilted diagnally thru the square following your pattern. Start with the 1st square in the middle. Then quilt thru the the next group of same fabric color. Your quilted area will continue to grow larger as you go.

Beautiful quilt.

That really is stunning. I'd have to move my dining room furniture into my kitchen to get that much floor space :) ! Good luck. You might see if your community center or library has an area where you can work on a project like that. Our guild has a work night at the Bernina store here once a month. You might check into something like that.

Robbit, BJ took the words that first came to my mind when she said "stunning" what a beautiful quilt! You did a great job. Are you going to try to machine quilt it, or hand quilt?

robbijmorris 03-03-2008 07:34 PM

I think I will machine quilt it. I am not very brave yet. I followed some stencil patterns with my daughter's quilt, but this is really big. I will probably straight-line stitch down the middle of the blocks in a diamond pattern, and pick a nice stencil to do on the borders. I am not a hand quilter. That takes too much attention to detail. I need faster results than that, or I will never finish it ( I just know me, I have tried to hand stitch before, and they are still unfinished after like 9 years, lol)

Also, I was thinking just plain white thread. I know that seems very bright and stark, but I think it will go well with the rest. What do y'all think?

I would use maybe white on white, black on black, then find 2 or 3 shades of grey.

helenrhoades 03-03-2008 08:56 PM

I'm in love with black and whites! You did an amazing job!!

Wow that is one awsome quilt and what a lot of pieces......good job :D

Joan 03-04-2008 06:48 AM

Your title is quite appropriate ("my pride and joy"). Yes, I would certainly be proud. What a beautiful quilt, I haven't even attempted anything bigger than a lap size or crib size quilt (yet!). STUNNING!

robbijmorris 03-04-2008 04:14 PM

Wow,

thanks you guys. I appreciate the comments. I have never really shared my quilts with anyone but family, and it feels good to get honest feedback.
The way the idea came to me was kind of funny, I was doing a project for a college class I am taking right now ( I'm pursuing my Bachelor's). I was doing a powerpoint presentation, downloaded a picture of a quilt that came across in black and white. The technique is the one where you sew the strips in a circle then un-sew them according to a chart. Honestly, it just flew together once I got to a certain point. Anyway, thanks al lot

robbijmorris 03-04-2008 04:24 PM

ok, lol, I probably did not describe it very well. You cut the fabric in strips, then sew the strips in order from lightest to darkest. Then you sew that piece into a big circle. After that, you cut the thing into 2 " (or whatever size). It makes a big circle of blocks cut the appropriate size in the right order. Then, the pattern comes with a chart that you use to rip the seam between the appropriate blocks and sew those together. It works quite well, and I think it must be so much faster than cutting a bigillion little 2 " squares and piecing them the other way!

Belinda 03-06-2008 05:55 AM

WOW...so big and soooooo pretty!

Gale Leone 03-06-2008 06:36 AM

Awesome!! Are there directions written somewhere or a website to copy the pattern??

thanks, G

Diamonds 03-06-2008 06:40 AM

It is gorgeous... I would have never dreamed of a black and white around the world..

robbijmorris 03-06-2008 07:19 PM

The name of the pattern is Colorsplash Trip around the world, by Piecemakers. I bought the pattern about a year back. It took me a while to gather all my shades of black and white! :) Thanks everyone for all the compliments!

egranger 03-09-2008 07:41 AM

Baren*eh*ked_canadian 03-10-2008 06:26 PM

That's beautiful !!

Can I ask how many hours went into that? I'm working on one like that but in colour :)

azdesertrat 03-10-2008 06:55 PM

if feasible you could take to a long arm quilter and she could baste it for you,of course for a fee,but you would have to check for prices.

dreamdanzzer 03-10-2008 07:12 PM

WOW - it is absolutely StUNNING~~ wonderful job!

Feathers 03-13-2008 07:38 AM

Whoooooh! That's some gorgeous quilt. You are looking for a big place to lay it out. Your public library probably has a conference room with a big table or tables that could be moved together to accommodate your quilt. Call them and ask if you can come and use it. Your tax dollars are paying for the library so they are usually really happy to let people use the facilities if they are available. Good luck!

quiltmaker101 03-13-2008 08:03 AM

The sewing machine repair shop here also has quilt classes and a fabric selection. They recently added a long arm machine that can be rented by the day. If you have something like that in Amarillo, you won't need to baste it!

That is one gorgeous quilt!

Diane007 10-01-2012 07:32 PM
