This is my little sewer. Trust me I keep an eagle eye on her everytime she climbs up to the machine, and so far she hasn't insisted on lessons, though last night she was asking "I sew now?"

My sewing machine light comes on if the machine is on, so I know at all times the status of the machine.

She is so cute!!!! Love that smile!

Maybe we'll wait a little while, ;) I'm not sure I'm quite ready to share my new machine! :D Currently what she does when she is up there is as follows:

She messes with the presser foot, putting bits of fabric under as though to sew. She also as you can see plays with the spool of thread. These three photos are in the order they were taken. Then she will attempt to thread the machine. Last time she did it all but the needle at the end, yes I know that one is hard to believe, but when I saw the pictures and the status of the machine I knew it to be true.

She doesn't play with the fly wheel, and she has yet to turn the machine on and off, which I figure means I have about two minutes before she's doing that too!

I kept trying to take the photo of her "working" but the red eye kept warning her that I was taking the photo.

Oh how cute.....you better be getting you an old machine or your gonna have to share....

She is adorable and obviously sitting at a sewing machine makes her reallly happy. I do not think it is going to be much longer before you are going to be sharing that seat!

What a cutie! How old is she? Can you find her a little machine to sew on? I just got one for Maddy at the Spartan store for $22.00 and it sews real well. She is eager to learn!

I'm rather worried about the super sharp needle (having sewed my own finger to a quilt and ripping it away at the oh my goodness of it all), and the foot pedal in combination.

I can see it in the air here - you will be having competition VERY soon! She is a doll - do they still make the "play sewing machines" that really did work? Maybe that would help?

She is just to cute, there you have a quilter for sure or maybe a fashion designer.

A fashion Designer, that's cute, if it where up to my daughter everyone would wear polka dots, and I would make her a new outfit every single time we go past the polka dotted fabrics! :D

A pretend childs sewing machine sounds perfect. She currently has a pretend iron that I picked up for her (50 cents!) on an after Christmas sale at the LTS (local toy store), and she loves to help me iron. If any tears :cry: spring up I can easily fix them by asking her to sit and help me iron. :D Oh if it could always be that easy! :D

Dh thinks we should get her one of those children's sewing machine that everyone loves to hate, and take the needle out. That way it will make all the noises and be completely safe. Then later put the needle back in when she's ready to really sew.

I'd get her one of those Janomes if they weren't $100, anyone have a child's sewing machine they'd like to be rid of? I'd be more than willing to take a working vintage. ;)

You might want to keep the machine unplugged just to be on the safe side Elizabeth...she just looks like she knows way to much about what she is doing!

Check out Ebay, they currently have several small machines listed for children. They are with the regular sewing machines.

I have been looking for one for my GD, she is four. :)

Good idea with the lights and sound with no needle. Maybe you can invent some kind of game that will help with speed control.

I started my first lessons on my old machine, but have moved my GDs to my new one because it has a governor on it and I can turn the speed down to a plop-plop that is easy to control things under. We also start by making lines on paper, no thread. I draw lines and they outline them with the needle. By the time we have material and thread there's a fair bit of control and lots less frustration.

Thanks, for the tips. I think we're going to go with the no needle first and then when she becomes impatient I'll begin working with her. Right now she seems to be enjoying her fiddling.

That is way to cute and she looks like she is having fun playing. SHe'll pick it up quickly since she is already playing. Heck she might have a quilt done before she is 4.

And to think I thought I needed a quilting budy! :D And here I have one right in my own home. Just yesterday I was cutting hexagons and she wanted to do it to. It's sometimes hard to remind myself that if I put her off now, she wont want to later. :)

You could use templates and construction paper to cut out designs. Use stick glue and make designs on white paper. Learn to construct patterns and use color. Later graduate to iron on applique. She may just be the next great quilt artist. Think how great she'll be at tracing and cutting.

She has a great smile. How old is she? Why not start her on hand sewing? I think five is a good age, you need good cordination to not hurt the fingers.

She loves to practice with the small children's scissors I bought for her, she trim paper and fabric alike into tiny little triangles all over the floor, hey at least I have a vac!

Thanks, she's three, not to minutes she told me we needed to buy fabric! "Us buy fabric?" uh hu, right dear... sooon dear...

My GD has a tote with material in it. Her mommy says she gets the same look on her face when she finds the perfect material as I do. I take her with me when I go to the fabric store and she always picks out a fat quarter or a half yard of special material that calls to her. Encourage her now and I have a quilting buddy for life. I keep saying we are making memories.
