my new old quilt
3 Attachment(s)
This was the other thing I got at yesterday's auction. (I bid on a gorgeous all-greens Dresden plate quilt, but it went for a lot!) This one is a utility quilt, I think, with a lot of feed sacking, gingham, and what my grandma used to call pajama plaids. It's got some issues-it's grubby, there are thin spots in the batting, and there are a couple of places--one bad--where the fabric is worn through. It was also, to my (admittedly inexperienced) eye, quilted by a novice. The piecing is fine, but the quilting looks about what I think mine would look like. The stitches are wildly uneven, and not particularly straight to the stitching line. It's bound-crookedly-on the two longer sides, in bright turquoise. You can see a little bit of it on the bottom right in the last picture.
But I like it-someone clearly learned on this quilt, and I'd hate to have my first efforts judged 80 years after the fact. Beyond washing it very carefully (it smells musty, and it's grubby) I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it yet. On the whole, I consider my day at the auction a success, even though I didn't get any of the things I'd gone for.
I don't recognize one of the blocks. I see log cabin blocks, and there's a couple courthouse steps blocks, but what are the other ones?
