Do you usually work like this? You're really good at it.
Seems like you're already pretty good at EQ.
Your quilt is beautiful. I'll bet that pattern would look good in a whole lot of color schemes.

Yes, I kinda did. And yes, it seemed backwards to me, too, but I looked at what sizes the scraps were that were already given to me, and I wanted to utilize as big of pieces as possible...so, I debated using 5" squares as the largest (several of the scraps given to me were only 5" wide) but they don't play well with 2.5" squares and I like working with 2.5" squares but not 2.75". Mostly I wanted to utilize as much of the fabric as possible, and by cutting as many pieces as possible first, I decided to try it that way. It was backwards, I know...but not sure what else to do. I needed to see how much fabric I actually had.

After I cut, I counted and then went to the computer.

dunster: Very elegant and modern. With EQ, it sometimes help to preview the quilt without the seam and block lines, which are probably what made it look like less white than it turned out. However I think the white is what makes it so wonderful.
OK...will look for that setting. My knowledge of EQ 6 is very basic. While I've worked through the book, I find that I forget stuff if I don't constantly use it. And I don't have time to constantly use it since I want to learn EMBIRD as well...and sew and do other stuff...

For example, I have some embroidery blocks done. I would like to randomly place them on a black setting (like a design wall) but don't have a clue how to do that on EQ...but need to try to figure it out.

That is an awesome design.

It is very beautiful! Great design. I've been collecting some of that fabric.

All the quilts I make with the scraps go back to the group for charity give away at the local hospital for terminally ill patients. And of course, there's always Bonnie Hunter to help me along with patterns for scraps. Dishpan, not just for doing dishes.. more for holding scraps separated by color. lol

I have a bunch of dishpans that hold "Projects In Progress".....they are just the right size to hold fabric and the magazine or pattern....and then I stack them in the corner of my quilting space so when I'm in a mood to work on something different, I can just grab one and pick up where I left off. PS. Found the dishpans at Kroger for $1 on sale a couple of years ago!

Absolutely stunning....from scraps.

Of course not. That's why I posted it. The smallest squares are 1.5", the bit larger are 2.5" and the middle squares are 4.5".

Thank you for permission to use you pattern. I am working toward using up a lot of scraps and running out of ideas. I love a lot of white area in scrap quilts...this is perfect.

Barb_MO 02-01-2014 05:35 AM

The more I look at this the more I love it. You did an excellent job with what you had to work with.

dove 02-01-2014 05:38 AM

I am sometimes the happy recipient of other people's leftovers. One church in GA sent me some fabric and in with that fabric was a bunch of scraps that seemed to be coordinated. As I pulled all of the fabric out of the box, I saved out what seemed to be similar in color and touch (very, VERY nice feel to this fabric). Instead of throwing it in with my normal scrap/box, I put it all together in a ziploc bag and put it in my UFOs cabinet. I wanted to keep them together, and didn't know where else to put it.

This week, I wanted to work on something but am not up to starting something really big like a bargello, intricate illusion quilt or something like that, so I began thinking about my UFOs. I opened the cabinet and pulled out this bag of stuff. I decided to do my own challenge quilt. [Note: I've never been sure of the purpose of a "challenge" quilt just for the purpose of accepting challenge, as I always have plenty of my own projects without someone else telling me what colors, etc to use--] :p

So, I challenged myself to make a quilt top out of these fabrics--I could add off white/cream to stretch it, but not add other fabrics/colors.

I had to sleep on it overnight.

I decided to go ahead and cut up the fabric into squares and strips, 4.5", 2.5" and 1.5". I decided no triangles as there is more waste with them and I needed all the fabric I could possibly come up in order to get a bed sized quilt. :D At least that is my story and I'm sticking to it!

I made as many small 4 patches out of the 1.5" strips as I could before I went to EQ to see what I could do.

I have always liked the simplicity of floating blocks of fabric and these fabrics are really pretty/nice, but found out quickly that I actually had more fabric than I would need for that simple style and I wanted to use it all up, so I came up with this design:

(I only floated the 2.5" squares):

I managed to use up almost every bit of fabric. I do have some scrappy 2.5" blocks that I made by sewing small pieces together.

And here's the top. Just finished. And almost no leftovers/scraps (OK, OK...there are a few, but not many, I promise!) In the end it looks more white than I envisioned on the computer, but it is fine and I am pleased.

It is queen sized---88x96"

WOW is what I would say you did a lovely job I wish I was that color coordinated awesome job.

that is lovely....what a great use of "scraps"!!!

Krystyna 02-01-2014 07:00 AM

Breathtakingly beautiful! I really admire your ability to take scraps and make a rather intricate plan to use them. How on earth did you figure out how much you would need with all those tiny bits? Hats off to you! You're my new scrap quilting heroine!

A1penny 02-01-2014 07:01 AM

I absolutely LOVE what you did and your story and photos with it! What a lovely, interesting quilt. You're working through the process is amazing! Thanks so much for sharing your story, not just the beautiful quilt!

carreen 02-01-2014 07:06 AM

The scraps came to me color coordinated. Someone else apparently made a quilt with these fabrics and had some leftovers. I only added the cream/off white to make it work.

nena 02-01-2014 07:28 AM

I have that same fabric. That is an awesome quilt. LOVE it.

nativetexan 02-01-2014 07:46 AM

Oh that is an absolutely wonderful design. love your quilt!!

rakerlm 02-01-2014 08:06 AM

Really nice!

Peggyinno 02-01-2014 08:10 AM

You met your own challenge!! Love the quilt and thank you for letting us use the pattern! It will be added to my "quilty bucket list"!

fangman 02-01-2014 08:20 AM

Very pretty quilt.

cindy4857 02-01-2014 08:23 AM

Ok, I'm totally impressed. First off I never could of envisioned a queen size quilt with the scraps you had (didn't look like there was nearly enough). Secondly it looks like it walked off the page of a quilting catalog. 3rdly you inspired me to look more closely at my scraps, and lastly I really like it. God blessed you with a lot of talent for quilting.

thimblebug6000 02-01-2014 08:23 AM

Well it's all been said here already, but I do have to say I am very impressed with how you went about your sorting, stitching and planning, you ended with a fantastic quilt! Thanks so much for sharing your process, it's so inspiring to see how others work.

Looks like Cindy & I were typing at the same time, using very similar descriptions

justflyingin 02-01-2014 08:31 AM

You all are too kind.

I'm pretty critical of the design--esp. the corners, now that I'm finished. But it's done (at least the top is...)...;)

wildwoodflower12390 02-01-2014 08:32 AM

Beautiful, love the colors.

quilterpurpledog 02-01-2014 08:32 AM

Great quilt. I love the challenge you gave yourself. You are an encouragement to some of us who have heaps of scraps. I never know how to organize them. I am afraid to pre-cut them for fear that I won't have the right sizes so I just keep looking at the bins of scraps-it is like brain freeze.
