My portable design wall!

2 Attachment(s)
I do not have room for a permanent design wall, so here is what I came up with! It is a cardboard tri- fold display board. I found it at Wal-Mart, but I am sure an office supply store would have them as well. I used 1 1/2 yards of white flannel, taped it snug (but not tight, if that makes sense, it has to fold) on the back. It will fold into thirds when not in use. It measures 48" wide x 36" tall. Not huge, but better than nothing!

very inventive

KyStitcher 02-08-2015 06:44 AM

Way Cool! Just what a quilter with limited space needs!

I don't have any wall space---great idea, I may have to try this!!!

nice design wall

It all boils down to what you have space for and when you can put your blocks up and stand back you always get a better picture. Looks good to me.

QUILTNMO 02-08-2015 10:42 AM

great idea!!!

Red Girls Mom 02-08-2015 11:04 AM

Outstanding! I love to hear of how quilters with limited space come up with innovative ideas to "make it work". Good job, and something anyone can do. Thank you for sharing!

ManiacQuilter2 02-08-2015 11:21 AM

Looks good to me as long as the tape holds the flannel in place.

JuneBillie 02-08-2015 12:27 PM

That is a great idea. It is like using one of those science projects boards that students use to put up their display.

JuneBillie 02-08-2015 12:31 PM

For when someone needs as little space as possible for a design area, wouldn't it be great if some flannel (light weight) could be glued to a cheap window shade, but installed wherever it needed to be on a wall, and then when not in use could be rolled up? The problem is, I don't know if it would roll up or not.

What a great idea. I think I just figured out what to do with my the box my new dishwasher came in.

joyful1 02-08-2015 02:33 PM

Very neat idea!

Mamaw322 02-08-2015 04:15 PM

I bet the window shade idea would work! Great idea!

Nanny's dollface 02-08-2015 05:45 PM

Perfect! Just what I need for my room!

Grandma Peg 02-08-2015 07:34 PM

Great idea and recycling also.

Anniedeb 02-08-2015 09:00 PM

Wow....very inventive idea....I have THREE of those stashed behind my China Hutch...left over from science projects and funerals!! (Used them for picture boards). Couldn't just throw them away after disassembling them....now I know what to do with them!

Ditzyprints 02-09-2015 02:39 AM

Thank you for sharing, I may make one too!

earthwalker 02-09-2015 02:43 AM

Clever, I was thinking of buying one of those office divider thingos (they use them in open plan offices). Only thing is you can't put it away like yours.

Great for retreats also! Thank you for the pictures.

Baysidegal 02-09-2015 08:18 AM

Great idea! Mind if I steal your idea? I have been using flannel stapled to the front of a bookcase and rolling it up when company comes LOL.

Plee1053 02-09-2015 12:57 PM

Thanks for the Great idea! I am going to make one as I have very little space for a wall too.

copycat 02-10-2015 03:19 AM

Great idea! How kind of you to post photos and explain how you made it! I like the size for bring along to Sew days also. I just might have to make one myself, I like it SEW much! Enjoy using it!

twinkie 02-10-2015 03:37 AM

I love to see it when someone recycles. Good job.

jbingwell 02-10-2015 03:49 AM

Thank you! I have been trying to figure out how I can have a design wall in one of the world's tiniest sewing rooms! I'll get one of those boards today. Perfect for my space!

2manyhobbies 02-10-2015 04:03 AM

Line those tryptich boards. Good idea.

coopah 02-10-2015 04:28 AM

That's a very smart use of those project boards.

Elaine433 02-10-2015 05:15 AM

Great idea and I already have all the makings for it in the house.

lorimax5859 02-10-2015 09:06 AM

Thanks! Almost bought one at the Phoenix Quilt Show last month. Glad I didn't because I'm going to try this one!!!

chris_quilts 02-10-2015 09:38 AM

I typically hang a flannel sheet, using worn out sewing machine needles, on a wall and work on that. My problem is my dogs and their tails coming along and knocking my pieces off the wall. It is one way to have a design wall that's portable and storable although the tri-fold board is a good idea for runners and smaller pieces.

MargeD 02-10-2015 11:53 AM

What a fabulous idea. Thanks for sharing.

NIICHMOM 02-11-2015 10:33 AM

I like your idea. I have a permanet Wall, but like last week I was working on another quilt and I still had my last quilt top on the wall so I covered that quilt with batting and started putting up my new quilt blocks...Your idea would have worked for me then... so it's something to keep in mind..Thanks
