I do believe she could take a burlap sack and make it beautiful. The 9 patch's were rescued from 'trash' that was about to be thrown away when someone was cleaning out a vacant home. My office manager (aka - daughter) went to do the inspection and found these little jewels poking their little heads out of the trash bag. When she pulled out one she immediately saw over 100. I do believe they were the ugliest fabrics I have ever seen but having been raised to use everything I hand washed, dried and pressed each one. Then as I was trying to figure out what to do with them- nothing matched anything, I said what the heck. Add some colorful borders and this is what I got. It is really bright. Now what kind of backing would go with this? While at the local Walmart, the clerk laid a whole bolt (20 yards) on the clearance table and priced it at $1 per yard. It was so bright and fun I had to have it. So that is my story of my little ugly duckling. What started out as not so pretty has grown into a "happy" quilt. Either side that I look at makes me smile.

I love that quilting design.

What fun - great job

raedar63 08-02-2011 05:44 AM

Wow ! that is a beautiful quilt. The way you outlined the blocks really sets it off. How big is each individual 9 patch unit?

Kairos Dan 08-02-2011 06:03 AM

Now that is a price to make a quilt that I can live with, Ha Ha.

Jabear617 08-02-2011 06:12 AM

Beautiful quilt! It looks ready to snuggle up in:)

Rock Lady 08-02-2011 06:50 AM

I thini it is absolutely beautiful. You turned what you considered an "ugly duckling" into a "beautiful swan". That is so great.

grannypat7925 08-02-2011 07:06 AM

Gorgeous colors, I love 9 patch quilts. I guess I'm very traditional at heart. The fishie backing fabric is perfect too, I love to find a surprise on the back.

Harmony 08-02-2011 08:31 AM

I love what you did with thos nine patches! Now your "found" treasure is both beautiful and useful! Good work!

dphelps 08-02-2011 09:06 AM

Nothing ugly about this quilt. I think you did a great job of "garbage". Makes me smile as well.

lue 08-02-2011 09:06 AM

It's lovely. I was raised by a depression era mom so I have a hard time throwing things away as well. This means I have LOTS of scraps to make something similar to what you've done. THANK YOU! And the $1/yard Walmart find is fabulous!! I love a bargain. (You go to hell if you pay retail)

Did you use the short cut 9-patch method?

GailG 08-02-2011 11:18 AM

Your "ugly duckling blocks" have been transformed into a beautiful swan. Awesome work. I love the colors -- backing included.
