Very nice. The small purple sash between the blocks sure set it off. I have a bag of scraps, just waiting until I get to them for a string quilt. Sara

I love the quilt. How do you do a string quilt???
Great job!!!!!!!!!!

sewmuch 10-04-2007 09:50 AM

Thanks. I do mine on a 9 inch piece of muslin, starting in the center diagonally, sew strips on. I use 1, 2, 2 1/2 inch strips or smaller on the ends. I got this pattern off another site, is it ok to say where it is?? Nancy

I really do like the string quilt with the sashing. I think that really adds an attractive element. I get the fact that the seams don't have to match when you put the blocks together, but it really bothers me when they don't. Maybe too many years of teaching Math? Anyway, I love your quilt.

lin 10-04-2007 10:42 AM

Those are beautiful sewmuch. I love how you changed the way you put the blocks together to get a different pattern on each one. I did a large string quilt and drew out the pattern I wanted on graph paper first. I was amazed at the limitless patterns you can get with this simple technique. I really likes yours!! :)

Here is the website where I got the pattern for the string quilt.

They really are fun and easy and don't have to be perfectly matched. No stress involved.

I made a string quilt with colors of all one group. I started with a 19 or 20 inch foundation piece, puting the darkest color in the middle going to the lightest to the right side. Then I turned the block around and went the other way. After I had 2 of the block finished, I cut them into 4 pieces. I put the dark colors together into a diamond and the light ones together into a diamond. I alternated the diamonds between light and dark to make the couch sized throw. I then sandwiched it with polyester and a sheet to back. I stitched in the ditch for the quilting. I put the light binding around it with a decorative stitch. I made this green one for my DIL. She hasnt seen it yet. Sure hope she likes it. It's just another idea for a string quilt.

Ellen, very pretty :D Love the colors and the way you split the blocks to get a totally different design. Your DIL is going to love it! :D :D :D

How original! I really like this quilt. :) I also like that you used a mono-chromatic theme. It works! Very nice.

EllenK 10-15-2007 03:15 PM

Thank you Amma and Lin for your kind words.
I have one started in purples and lilacs then another one to do in blues. Cant wait to get them both finished.

judy_68 10-15-2007 04:00 PM

You should swap your strings.
I keep all of mine. I have them all cut into 1", 1-1/2", 2", 2-1/2", and 3" strips. I have several blocks made with them. I just have to put them together now.
Judy

Beautiful string quilts. Goes to show there's no limit to the imagination in quilting.

The string quilt was one of my favorite things to piece as a child. We used squares of newspaper and peeled it off later. I like the idea of muslin and leaving it there better.
