I forgot to tell ya'll...a few weeks ago I went to the Salvation Army in a town about 45 min away...I had just got there and I see a worker rolling out a rack of things to put away and I spy a quilt...so Im following her trying to get a better look and waiting for her to hang it up, as soon as she did, I grabbed it!!! It has a couple spots that need mending (any advice on how to do this would be great) but otherwise is in great shape, and it is labeled, Shoo-Fly Block, 1993, made by P.W., Woodhull, IL, which is town farther north. It not old, but I love it, the colors are more accurate in the one block I show that has the small tear. Its hand quilted and pieced and queen size. And I got it for $15.00!!

What a great find!
You might try a small whip stitch to mend it. Or, if you could find a piece of fabric around the same color, try to fit it in |
What a gem!
Great Stuff! Hope the maker of the quilt doesn't know that it was donated to the Sal. Army.... That quilt is really beautiful.
what a great find...... lucky you
What a deal for $15. Some of the ladies that retired with me scour the thrift shops in Milwaukee on a regular basis. Everytime we get together for birthdays, everybody wants to know what their latest great finds were.
Good for you!! It looks beautiful on your bed! And for $15?! Wow!!!!!! :D :D
Great find. It would be interesting to know why it was sent to salvation army instead of handed down to someone.
How wonderful that it found it's way to a true quilt lover. It has a good home now. Sort of like a abandoned puppy.
Great buy! How could anyone possibly let something that cool go to a thrift shop????
It is amazing what some people find they don't want!
I had a friend whose mother worked in a nursing home and she collected about four quilts from families that did not want them after the loved one had passed away. They told her if she did not want them they would be 'thrown' to goodwill. How sad! I had an idea about the mending you have to do. What I thought would be to stitch it closed and then maybe applique something over it. Depending I guess on where it is. But you could applique in a couple spots so it looks intentional. Just me two cents worth! Kendra |
A piece of light weight fusible underneath the tear before you mend to keep the edges from puckering :D
I'm glad it's in your hands!!! :D
Very pretty!
It's a shame after all the love that went into making that, that is was given away. But lucky for you! |
Great for you!! My heart would be broken to know that a quilt I made went to the Salvation Army or Goodwill, but if someone who loves and appreciates it picks it up for a decent price...then it's all good. I love shopping at my local Goodwill stores, there are 3 here that are close enough for me to visit every week...I DON'T visit them every week...but I'd like too!! lol

Great find!

What a pretty quilt and a great find. Glad it has a good home now.

What a great find. It's unbelievable what people do with such wonderful peices of work.
If only they knew how much work goes into quilt. |
What a wonderful find!!!! I, too, would be heartbroken if a quilt of mine ever ended up at the Salvation Army or Goodwill or any of those...
I know you will take really good care of this one :D |
Some lady loved that quilt, because she did such beautiful work, we don't know the reason she has lost it, maybe she has passed, but it has found
someone .else too love it. We love to quilt and love to give them maybe it found you enjoy |
nice!
I'm glad it's found a loving home.
A few years ago my sister found an afghan at the Goodwiil that someone gave away. It was tagged to a boy from grandma. She went home & cried, to think that the love that went in it, to just be thrown away. I have everything my grandmother ever gave me & cherish them.
I would say you hit the jack pot..............
I too love thrift stores but have never found anything as great as your find. Keep looking........ BOL |
Oh good for you! I'd say the quilt has found a great home!
I haven't read the entire thread, so someone else may have already suggested this. You could use prepared fabric sheets (JoAnn's has them) and SCAN & PRINT the fabric that needs repairing with your printer. Sue Hausman talked about this at a class she gave in Tucson recently, and I thought it was a neat idea for repairing quilts - or for finishing quilts when you run out of fabric and just need a LITTLE bit more.
It's hard to believe a pretty quilt like that would be given away...but better for it to go to someone who can really appreciate all the work that went into it...like you!! Great find!!
Man was that luck....someones loss is your gain....how wonderful that it is a signed quilt as welll......See ladies we should sign our quilts.....or at least date them....as Martha Stewart would say ..."That is a Good thing".....:-)
