My Version of an Antique Quilt
4 Attachment(s)
After reconnecting with some friends, I was compelled to make them a quilt. For many years, I always included them in our Christmas gifting circle therefore they always received handmade gifts from me. We recently reconnected after some years of life getting in the way, and I decided I had some Christmas gifts to catch up on. I wanted to make a classic looking quilt for them, so I started hunting through pictures of antique quilts online and found this and fell in love:
I got some graph paper and started to figure out a pattern to recreate it. I was originally going to make 12" blocks, but I had trouble with getting the sizing correct, so I settled on 9" blocks (finished) and made more blocks than the original because I wanted it to be a nice sized quilt. Here is my version: I purposely bought 6-7 fabric pairings plus pulled a bit from my own fabric to give it a scrappy look. I love the backing fabric and had exactly enough, whew. It finished at ~74"x84" inches. |
Beautiful quilt, you have drafted and made a beautiful quilt!!!

Great "modernization" of an old quilt.

Lovely quilt!

Lovely double 9 patch and snowball. Your friends should be thrilled.
|
Perfect gift! Bet it feels good to have made something special for your friends.

You've made a quilt that your friends will treasure always.:o

Aah I love to see repros of the old quilts.. Yes and you learned that little 9P in the corner of the block doesn't play nice with a 12" block. Who wants to cut squares or strips 1.66" to make the 9P equal to 4" finished block.

I just found this pattern in my file cabinet! Your colors are so pretty! Now I am anxious to do one since yours look so pretty. I have a hard time sometimes visualizing a quilt pattern from a sketch, but now that I have seen yours, I am anxious to get started.

Thank you, thank you!! After seeing this pattern yesterday, I retrieved the box of 9 patch blocks that were left among my mother's projects when she passed away in 1993. I've been wondering what to do with those and this is perfect! Since I now have at least 20 of the bigger blocks ready to be assembled with sashing or the plain blocks as you have them, there have to be more than 100 of the little 9 patches made by her. I recognize some of the fabrics from the past and this is wonderful to finally have them moving into a quilt for actual use rather than in a box in the attic.
Her blocks had never been squared so time was taken to do that but my finished blocks are now 10.5". I'm sure these were all cut with scissors rather than rotary cut and can you believe the seams are about 1/8"! Was it a Singer Slant-o-matic that had that skinny presser foot? She probably used the width of the presser foot for the seam allowance. |
