Ok, I was the one yesterday whining and complaining about how hard it was to let my son off at his college dorm for the first time. I am trying really hard to get over it, and I gotta say, you guys are amazing and a lot of help. More than one of you suggested that I get off my butt and into my sewing room even if I didn't do anything in there. Ok, your right and I did, thanks!! Of course I think this getting over the son being gone thing is a little easier today thanks to him not getting back to me when he wants me to drop off the stuff he left behind and the shopping list he and his roommate came up with. Think I may be busy when he finally gets around to remembering me... or not! :P
Anyways, went in to my sewing room (overcrowded dining room), and couldn't just do nothing, so I did something. Here it is - my very first quilt block!! Ta da!! Its going to be a flip flop wall hanging with nine blocks. Yes, I know I goofed on the flip flops on this one, but the others I didn't, and this one will always make me smile as I remember how it was the day after I was so sad about his leaving and so irritated at him now! Hey - I can blame it on him!! Anyways, thanks for looking - and for being there. Virg |
That is cute. I like the palm tree fabric. :) Things will get easier over time.

You Go Girlfriend! Way to turn things around :)

Glad you got started on a block.
Will you be able to convert his room so you can move out of the dining room? Th first day my last one went to kindergarten, I went to the fabric store and bought a ton of double knits and cotton knits to make her more school cloths. Had a blast sewing. Oops, with that fabric my age is showing. LOL |
I love that fabric :D:D:D Congrats on making your first block :D:D:D

Congratulations, now doesn't making blocks feel better than crying?
|
I like your block, and am glad that aren't taking over his room. He still needs a room to come home to on school vacations. To take over his room at the present would be like you were shoving him out.
I remember when years ago we left our son at college. I was thinking, 'my baby has grown up' and had a few tears in my eyes. When it was time for our youngest girl, the last of 3 children, to go to college, I was at the rejoicing point. We had succeeded!!! Three having graduated from high school and all going to college!! After her 'orientation classes' I asked her how she liked them. She said that she didn't go, but partied at the frats instead. Now here's a girl who wouldn't date in HS and was a home body, and didn't drink. When classes started, she was ready to study, and in her soph. year she met her husband to be. She told him that she was going to study, and so was he. His grades came up! |
It is a cool block. I have a niece going through her son going off to college. It is hard on her. I bet making this quilt will help you. You know he will think of you everytime he uses it.

good job

When my youngest went away to college I literally thought I was going to die of a broken heart...I cried for days. Her father and i had divorced when she was 11 and he was out of our life.....she was my life, probably too much so.
Believe me,it got better....I wanted her to come home every weekend, but after a while I was afraid she might come home every weekend ! I was struggling with a new career, feeling so alone and wanting to stay strong and support her. Really, believe me, really, it does get better; however, at that time no one could tell me that and make me believe it I had another rough time when she went to Ireland for a semester but again I lived through it. I never let her know how bad I felt because I didn't wanther to feel guilty about purusing her life and education. All is well, she graduated in 4 years with highest honors, has a job that she loves ( doesn't pay what she should be making, but loves it and feels like she is making a difference in the world); we live within 50 miles of each other, communicate often and get to visit about once a month. Stay strong, try and stay focused and stay busy. Believe me,all will be well. |
