My zero quilt and first quilt (top)
I would like to present my "zero quilt" and first quilt. The zero quilt is called that because I consider it a piece where all possible mistakes got accumulated so that I don't make them in my next works from then on. Then there goes the first "real" quilt that I am going to use at home (the zero one is intended as a picnic blanket - it is not "too good to put on ground"). The first quilt is a top only right now - I am going to buy batting and finish it after the next salary arrives on my account.
Mistakes or no mistakes, I also made a simple matching bag to keep the picnic blanket in. I hope it will be useful. I have already used it on one picnic and it felt good. https://www.quiltingboard.com/member...805-574569.jpg https://www.quiltingboard.com/member...805-574570.jpg https://www.quiltingboard.com/member...805-574571.jpg |
Welcome to the QB. You are a brave one to do this "zero" for your first quilt ! You've done a really great job. We learn by our mistakes. Don't let them discourage you. I've learned to just keep going and try to do better the next time. My kids don't care about "mistakes" and I've learned not to tell them about it. It's a great feeling to see them wrapped up in something you've made.

great job! my first quilt was a disaster
Good grief! You chose a really challenging pattern to begin with. All those points and sashing squares to match! Wow! You did an amazing job!
nicely done, i love the bag idea
great first quilt
Your first quilt looks wonderful. Love the name ...... zero quilt.
Welcome from Northern California. You have done a super job. I also love the idea of the bag. BrendaK

Very nice quilt and bag. Love your "zero" idea, very clever!
I see no mistakes. Great quilt!
Great quilt. I see you tackled "Y" seams on your 'first' quilt... nobody told you they were hard! :D And you handled them nicely.
Love the picnic quilt and bag to carry it in. I'll have to remember that. Thanks for sharing your projects with us. |
I didn't see anything wrong with either quilt. Just remember we are our worst critics. Just keep making quilts and you will be more pleased with them.
Welcome to this board, lots of helpful people here. |
Very nicely done.
Your quilt is lovely, and what a great idea on the bag. :)
I wish I could say that my "zero" quilt looked anywhere near that good.
Welcome to the QB...you certainly stepped out of the box for a first quilt project and you did it wonderfully. Congratulations...there is always something to learn in your quilting journey, I hope you enjoy it every step of the way.
Both are very nice, you did a great job.
Very pretty. Looks like you have been quilting a long time!
Keep sewing! We all make mistakes.
Welcome to the board! Awesome quilt! I really like the bag idea too. It is ready to go when you are.
Mistakes - Shmistakes. I see nothing wrong with your quilt. very good job!
and I love the fact you are going to "use" it rather than just look at it. It will feel so good to know you put lots of time and love into every time you see it :) |
You did a beautiful job. The print with the flowers is really striking. Thanks for showing us.
I think your "zero" quilt is great! You did a wonderful job and I love the matching bag. Your second quilt is great also. Pretty colors. You're doing good - keep going.

Welcome to the Board. I'm a newbie too. I have completed about a dozen or so quilts. I have been quilting less than 2 years and have learned the value of the QB. The support and encouragement are essential to your progress. These people are always kind and helpful and unselfishly share their expertise. Your first quilts look promising so try not to be too hard on yourself. Just see it as: Every mistake is a lesson learned! The quilting culture is filled with lifetime learners and much joy!
I threw away my first quilt. I think yours looks fine. What a challenge for your first quilt. Keep going - it gets better!
they are both very nice. It is good that you looked at the zero quilt as your practice quilt and where 'all possible mistakes could accumulate', but, I have been quilting for over 40 years and still my most used notion is my seam ripper! You will continue to make mistakes (less in size and severity) and you will keep learning from these errors. You will also learn which ones become design elements and do not need to be fixed. This comes with the territory. We learn new techniques, new patterns and new color combos all the time. And, with new things, comes new oopses!
Nice combo!Good job!
good start. Keep stitching and posting.
Looks like your on your way to being a great quilter!
Looks really great to me. You have made a terrific start on your quilt journey. You will have lots of fun on your journey. Best wishes and congratulations for your great beginnings.
Well done. Great quilts.

Good job on both the tote and quilt. Welcome to QB. We all have to start somewhere, and there's no time like the present. The very first quilt I made was a cheater panel that my sister had given me, and which I made into an outside blanket for my DD Kari who was about 5-6 at the time. I had purchased a few quilt magazines and watched a few quilt shows on PBS, but what I did was have one layer of poly batting with 2, yes two, layers of an old mattress cover. Yes, it was indeed very heavy, but my trusty Kenmore machine loved sewing on thicker fabrics, so the simple machine quilting I did, actually worked. My daughter loved it as she would take it outside and play with her Barbie dolls on the grass and nothing dared venture through the quilt. LOL. After that I only used one layer of batting on my quilts. I had made a bright blue and black double Irish Chain quilt for my son, who requested leopard print fabric on the back, which I found on sale. That quilt not only lived through grade school, high school, moved out with him when he left home and whenever he left home to return again, the quilt came with him.
