The pattern for this quilt calls for a 2-3 inch black border, and then another border....and I can't decide what I want to do!! My mother doesn't think the bigger border is the rght one to choose. That it might take away from the rest of the quilt. Any suggestions would be most appreciated!!

Oh I love this quilt!!! Personally I would go with one of the colors that is in the quilt itself. It is so bright and the border should be just as bright.... but that is my opinion.

i too would pick one of the vibrant solid colors and i would use that swirl print for the binding maybe 0.5-1.0 in size.
|
If you have more of the bright fabrics left, I'd put the black row first, then cut squares the same size as the inner coloured squares & grade the colours towards whatever colour is reaching out to the edge. And then another black border & then bind with the patterned fabric.
|
I would also go with the more vibrant color gang. I love the swirly pattern, but maybe for the binding.
|
Beautiful quilt!! I think I would use one of the solid colors as the final border also.

Beautiful quilt!!!!!!!! :D |
Your quilt is very pretty and vibrant!! I like the black border with one of your block colors, as well. The think the swirly fabric would be distracting.
|
i really like this quilt - was this an original design or did you use a pattern?
|
I two would put a small black border and then use several of the bright colors from the quilt....... finishing with a black binding.
Your quilt is wonderful........... Scrap Q |
I think I would use a solid color, but use the swirls for the binding and not the border. I love the quilt, it's goregous!
|
I'm with your mother on this one...and the general consensus that one of the bright colors already in the quilt would be a flash to further add to its beauty! Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful quilt!!!!!!!! :D This sounds good. Love the quilt. |
That busy print does not work at all with the solid colors of the quilt. I love the quilt, it's fantastic! Any of the bright colors in the quilt would be great for the border. And I would use a black binding to finish.

Beautiful quilt!!!!!!!! :D This sounds good. Love the quilt. Ditto!! Absolutely stunning quilt too!! You've done a fantastic job!! |
How about a piano-key boarder with all the colors from the quilt? I don't think your swirly fabric works well - it's too busy, too small, and it fights with the pattern (which is stunning)
|
I totally agree with Klue - black border with the swirly fabric as binding - or black binding and save the swirly fabric to use in a quilt where you can REALLY show it off!
Your quilt it STUNNING! |

Ditto! Beautiful quilt! |
I would go for a medium sized black, then a tiny bright border and finish with a medium black. That would encase your work and not take away from your design, but add a tiny spark of color in the border.
I have seen women sew all the colors together uniformly to make a long line of multi-colored strips which is used as the border strip. I am not sure I explained it right, but I am pretty sure that you know what I mean. right? I know whatever you do will be beautiful. I hope you are going to show the results later when it is finished. |
Beautiful work, pattern and colors! Very vibrant.
You've got a lot of suggestions to play with. Post pics and we can vote too. (If you want and can.) |
Beautiful quilt, whatever you decide!
|
i think a black wide border so the design floats and then a narrow bright binding in one color. show it when it's done, whatever you decide.
|
I don't have any suggestions for you, I just wanted to tell you that this is one of those quilts that took my breath away when I saw the picture!!! Absolutely stunning!!!! Wow!!!!
|
I have to agree. I think first the black border than one of your wonderful vibrant colors that are in the quilt. Beautiful quilt.
|
I don't have any suggestions except to send it to me when it's finished! :)
|

|

I was wondering too. Is this a pattern? The colors and fabric you picked is great. A very pretty quilt. |
Thanks everyone for the suggestions!!! Not sure yet what I am going to do, but I do know that I will not be using the swirl fabric in the border. The pattern is from Paducah...called Color Falls by Cozy Quilt Designs. My niece picked it out as a graduation present for her high school graduation next spring. I know I am early, but I wanted to work with all these colors!! Pickng them out was half the fun..... :D

BTW, I will show the end product, but I need to replenish my black. For some reason, I didn't get enough. Now just to find the right brand......

Wishing you good luck on finding the black you need. Your quilt is really very petty. Your neice is a lucky girl. :D |
Deb--I cannot wait to see your finished quilt. I am glad you are going to take everyone's advice about the border fabric. I think the swirls would be great for backing if you have enough of it.
