This actually isn't a disappearing 9 patch. I found it on About.com - the Bonnie Scotsman- see the above link for lots of free patterns. I've also seen this pattern block call 'Hopscotch'.

I agree - I like option 4 but would stay with the colors you have used in the rest of the quilt. Something about adding that stark black on the borders when it isn't anywhere else in the quilt, throws it off.
