Need help with quiting this quilt please...

Good morning, I made this French Braid quilt back in March for my friends husband and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to quilt it. I am so at a loss i have taken classes online with Craftsy and bought different books they were no help with THIS quilt. I really do not want to do the meander or SID I would like a fun creative pattern but I have not seen any French braid quilts with creative designs. The ones I have seen just outline the rectangles and feather the boarder which is not bad but I want something more... Thank you for your help and all your ideas

BTW the quilt is a queen size

Beautiful quilt, I love the Eagles!! Sorry I can't offer any idea's for the quilting, but would love to see it again when your finished!!

margee 12-01-2012 02:53 AM

I can't say it any better. The quilt is beautiful and creative. Please post a picture when it's completed.

ckcowl 12-01-2012 02:54 AM

i would outline the eagles - perhaps quilt additional eagles- or quilt trees, other wildlife into the quilt...you could do tall stands of pines along your braids...or fish & a river...(feed off the motif's you have & keep with the theme)...it is beautiful- i look forward to seeing what you come up with

i love this idea. my first thought was to quilt feathers on the eagle wings and panto birds over the rest of the quilt

Tartan 12-01-2012 03:09 AM

I like ckcowl's suggestion of pine trees quilted into the braids perhaps in the dark sections of the braids. You could do wind currents in between? It is gorgeous top!

Great idea!

I did 2 french braid quilts. On one, I did a wavy line up the braid with curls off the line. The on in my avatar was a celestial theme, so I quilted a meandering line with suns, moons, stars.

The picture attached is NOT mine, but I saved it for inspiration on a future quilt. Maybe you can use some of the design elements.

It is a gorgeous gorgeous quilt. Sorry no help for the quilting

GrandmaKathy 12-01-2012 05:23 AM

This quilt is breath-takingly beautiful.

nabobw 12-01-2012 05:40 AM

beautiful quilt

mshollysd 12-01-2012 05:58 AM

It is such a beautiful quilt. I just want to say, sometimes simpler is better when it comes to the design of the quilt. You really don't want to detract from the beauty of the colors of the quilt, or the eagles. I like the suggestion of quilting some eagles in the background, or other types of animals, but be very careful you don't take away the symmetry of the quilt. I am so sorry that the quilt hasn't talked to you yet. I would not SID though but my suggestion is look under pictures here for "Charisma". She is my idol when it comes to quilting and you may get some ideas from her pictures.

I saw the braids as looking like mountains, so my mind went in the same direction as CKCowl's ... more birds quilted in and in different flight positions. Other quilting keeping with a natural/wilderness feel.

QuiltForMe ... you have an outstanding quilt and have taken the French Braid concept, over and above! Perfect fabric selections and usage.

Diane007 12-01-2012 06:35 AM

very nice quilt top.
I would suggest some thing with cuvres

northern lass 12-01-2012 06:40 AM

I think your quilt is beautiful. Is it just me.....I see a mountainous background with a lake off centre right, and mountainous foreground. Some quilted trees would be lovely

paulettepoe 12-01-2012 06:56 AM

I love the idea of wind currents and trees in the quilting. Oh dang girl, you've out done yourself now. I think I want to do something similar for my now adult Eagle Scout son. I am just blown away.

azwendyg 12-01-2012 07:20 AM

Here are a of design I did on a table runner that I think would work well on full quilts also:

Ann912 12-01-2012 07:53 AM

Wow, this is beautiful!! Where did you get the eagle patterns?

mighty 12-01-2012 07:53 AM

Beautiful quilt, I agree that the quilting should be kept simple just enough to enhance it!!!!

Marjoeal 12-01-2012 08:52 AM

Swirls of wind with some tall skinny pines and maybe another bird or two flying in the distance. Beautiful quilt!

BrendaK 12-01-2012 08:54 AM

This is one of my favorite designs. I really want to do one and yours is AWESOME. Love the suggestions. Please show when you have finished. BrendaK

red-warrior 12-01-2012 09:32 AM

Stunning quilt but I am no help with the quilting!!!! I can't wait to see it done!

Tweety2911 12-01-2012 01:52 PM

Love, love your quilt. Eagles look fabulous on the backdrop. Lots of great ideas here. It all depends on your skill level of quilting. Perhaps you can draw out your quilting design ideas on a sheet of clear plastic placed over your quilt to see what you think would be best. I have bought clear plastic on a roll from Walmart/hardware stores. It comes in different thickness' and you can wash off if you use the dry eraser markers. Very helpful when you can't decide which design would work. Good Luck and please post when quilted.

dunster 12-01-2012 03:54 PM

When I look at the quilt I see mountains, possibly a stream in the lower light areas. I'd definitely go with a "landscape" theme in the quilting. The eagles make this quilt especially striking. Maybe even give them a nest? A tree along one side with some branches going out?

nanibi 12-01-2012 04:05 PM

It's really a beautiful quilt. It suggests mountain peaks, so I wonder about quilting the outlines of clouds somewhat randomly over the surface, at a density required by the batting. If this appeals, check out different styles of rendering clouds--our popcorn-y poufs, Japanese rather horizontal clouds, stylized Tibetan curlies, must be oodles more. And show a picture.

Quiltforme 12-01-2012 08:23 PM

Finally the quilt is talking!!!! The idea of the mountain and trees with swirling wind is perfect! I cannot tell you how awe struck I am at all your comments. I have been in a quilting funk for some time because of this quilt. I cannot wait to put it on the Mid arm and get it done! Tweety2911 I bought some acrilic plastic from Home Depot about 24x48 to use as my see through work table practicing on my quilts. I use visa vis pens and it works great I just could not come up with something that would work for it. I really do appreciate all your comments they are so encouraging!!!

kathbug 12-03-2012 04:29 AM

Your quilt is so beautiful . The eagles really make the quilt!

QuiltingCrazie 12-03-2012 05:33 AM

What I have heard and how I decide to quilt my quilts is that if it's squares do a circular type quilting if its circular do diamonds or lines so pretty much the opposite of the piecing. I use pantographs and don't do custom quilting so for that one I would probably do an all over simple pattern like
http://www.sewthankful.com/Feathers-...-Quilting.html
Whatever you do it will be beautiful!!

Love your quilt you just convinced me to make one for my son, I have been struggling trying to find the right pattern for him....stunning quilt

daisey 12-03-2012 06:48 AM

what a beautiful quilt!

solstice3 12-03-2012 10:04 AM

I would definitely outline the eagles. Maybe stitch in the ditch for the rest

"Charisma" was my first thought also - but with somewhat of a twist. I know she does fantastic quilts, and has a
pricing structure based on the type of quilting that is done, but recently I was wondering if she, or any other fantastic long arm quilter ever does or would provide a design for a quilt to be done by those of us who like to FMQ, but don't have the creativity gene.... thoughts? This would be something that we'd naturally pay for, but I think may be well worth the money.

sewdamncute 12-03-2012 06:24 PM

Beautiful quilt..I agree with a sort of "natural" quilting theme...wind, trees stuff like that.

mshollysd 12-05-2012 05:30 AM

I think you can do anything you set your mind too. I go through the pictures of other longarmers and see what kind of designs they put on different quilts to get some inspiration, if the quilt I have isn't talking to me.... I do think that you really don't want to take off of your beautiful work, so I would suggest Googling for quilting designs and find some all over pattern that incorporates eagles, and trees, etc. That of course is my opinion....
