okay well I have to first give an aside so you can understand what is going on. I have been working on a doll quilt for my neice who lives in CA for christmas. just finished it during nap time. well dd (2 1/2) got up from nap and saw it. She had a melt down when she found out it was for her cuz. so I grabed her doll quilt that I am hand binding the back on and made her choose which one to give to her cuz for chirstmas. well she chose the new one and said to send the one in the fabric that she picked out to her cuz. will post the pics in a min. Now I have to make her a new quilt for her new bed. It will be a full size one. she is currently sleeping on a futon till little bro can be moved to her old twin. And she said that she wanted to have a quilt just like Joys quilt that I made. (its the one that was supposed to be for her cuz)
Now this quilt was made from 5" squares using the 10 min block method. now I got them squared up at about 8 3/4" size. how many of these blocks would I need to have to make up an over sized full quilt? and should I just get a few charm packs and use those or try to cut out my own 5" squares? what do you guys think?

Both are beautiful

just another question popped into my head. how much yardage do you think it would take? would probably use at least 12 different fabrics for the squares. but that is if I don't just buy a charm pack.
the full size pre-cut batting is 81x96 and a queen size is 96x108. would get the queen size so that I can make sure that it will have plenty of hang over. how large would you guys make it? I was thinking 88x 100 or so. that sound about right?

Both are very nice and your DD is precious!

thank you for sharing and your measurement sounds right to me.

they're both beautiful. Just one question, what is a cuz?

If your 8 3/4" is the size before joining, then 10 blocks by 12 blocks will be about 83" x 99".
If your 8 3/4" is the finished size after joining, then 10 blocks by 11 blocks will be about 88" x 97".
Multiply the number of blocks times 4, for the four squares in each block.
This is the total number of 5" squares you need.
If you are cutting your own, figure on getting 8 squares across each 5" strip.
Divide the total number of 5" squares by 8 to know how many 5" wide strips WOF you need.
Because fabric measurements are not nice multiples of 5" it is probably easier to buy packets.

the quilts are great. i just made a small one with 5 inch charms and did 10 minute block style. the five inch are harder to work with though. but they look great!

Those are both so pretty. Great job.

thanks quilting cat. I was getting around needing about 240ish squares. just wanted to make sure i was doing my math right. thanks.

I would measure the bed, the top and how far you want it to go down on each side and end. That will give you a more accurate measurement. Mattress' are all different sizes now and bed heights are also different. So best to measure.

unfortunately we don't have the mattresses for the full size bed yet and my son is using it still. it is one of those convertible cribs that will turn into a toddler bed and a full size bed.

I'd say about 72 squares set 8x9. Both are beautiful. I would have kept the one she did too.

I'd go with charm packs It's quick and easy and no math necessary. ;)

other than figuring out how many you need. hehe. I think that I will go with the charm packs. save me cutting time and any time saved is wonderful. Now I was also thinking of using the 10" layer cake in the center as sort of a medallion effect for the quilt. but not sure yet. who knows what I will end up with when it is all said and done. hehe

Quilt4u 12-02-2010 07:43 AM
