I like the alternating idea, but if you want a more whimsical look go with the snowman and if you want more (the word I'm searching for escapes me, but I mean less whimical, go with the snowflake). You really can't go wrong, it will be terrific.

I think the flakes look sophisicated and snowmen...fun, whichever look you are wnating?

Since you asked which ones, I'm assuming you have enough of both. I'd put one each at the corners of triangle having a snowflaked and snowman on triangle.
