This is a quilt I made for an old friend of my mom's (I actually did my student teaching with her way back in the '70's.) This woman is crazier about cats than anyone I've ever met in my life, so I wanted to make her a cat quilt for Christmas. Once I got the top done, I'm afraid it's too juvenile, so I'm thinking of saving the top for when somebody has a little girl baby instead. What do y'all think? Too young for a 75-yr-old woman?

The narrow border looks black in the pic, but is actually dark green.

I agree with Jacque. When I first saw the picture I thought, "That's a cute baby quilt."

What if you were to downplay the pink, and upplay the green. You have a hunter green thin border. What if you get rid of the pink border, and do maybe a burgandy border? The burgandy would bring out the hunter green more, and it makes the pink more grown-up

I think it's a cute quilt, but yes, I think a bit too babyish for an adult.

Well, it's a cute quilt and now you don't have to run out for a gift if it's a girl you all ready have it. You shouldn't have a hard time finding cat fabric that tickles your fancy.

Ok , I have to admit that my mother would love it! Mom, and my aunts and even my grandmother, (when she was alive) all love those kind of juvenile fabrics. maybe a second childhood thing or something but I was always amazed cause I would have thought it was too young too!

I, too, think it's a bit young for your mom's friend. There are some great sites for cat fabrics, though. Good luck with it.

First of all...the quilt is absolutely adorable. But, before I could say if it were too juvenile for an elderly woman...I'd have to know the woman. Hopefully, yes it is much better suited for a baby or toddler. I do know some elderly ladies that are in the throws of dementia and alzheimer's that would be tickled silly with it!! Maybe you could donate it to an alzheimer's day care center or hospice or something.

I think it depends on the reciepant. It sure is cute.

Excellent point, Lisa. Many of the alzheimer's patients I know wouldn't go anywhere without their stuffed animals and would be just like Linus with that kitty quilt for sure!

Thank you again for all your opinions and your help. I've ordered some Laurel Burch fabrics, and I can't wait until they get here. This is going to be a VERY colorful quilt--and no pastels! I think it will suit my friend's personality much better. And in the meantime, I have a perfectly good baby girl quilt waiting for whenever--it needs only to be quilted!

I knew an elderly lady and her most favorite thing was a pink teddy bear her cousin made and she didn't have alzheimers disease, she actually was very up on current events. I think you know the lady you are making the quilt for and if you are doubtful I definately would make a more sophisticated quilt. I love the one you made, pink is such a nice color.

If you have any scraps left of the cat fabric, why not show her surreptitiously, and see what her reaction is. She may already have lots of "mature" cat decor items and something that exudes whimsy and playfulness might be just what she'd like. It could possibly remind her of days gone by when her children were small and full of wonder and the memories all those moments gave her. A gift basket with the quilt, the book, teas and cookies would be so cool! Plus, she may have a baby in her family that she could possibly pass the quilt and book on to, thus creating an heirloom for her family to cherish.

Doh...my edits aren't working this morning. Regarding my above post, I had suggested a complementary memory book for her to write down her memories of her life to accompany the quilt.

I guess I'm an odd ball...I know that most the ladies I know that age would love the fabric and the color....I can see them smiling as they see the kitty...good luck on making your decision....babeegirl had a grand idea....good to keep in mind...thanks for the tip babeegirl... :D
