I am fairly new to quilting, so I welcome advice from others who know so much more than I do. I'd like to make a lap quilt for my son using this fabric. All I can think of doing with it is to make squares with frames.Could I get some ideas on how you would use this fabric? I'd appreciate any ideas. Thanks.

You could do a warm wishes quilt, or alternate a large block of this with a nine patch block of similar colors.
|
You know I really like that piece and personally I would have a hard time cutting that one up. Could you use it as a center panel and then some cool borders and just quilt the top as is?
|
That is wonderful fabric!

I would just cut big squares of it out and frame them in two different colors(like red and black) so you could alternate the red and black bordered blocks.
It is wonderful fabric and it is hard to cut those kind up. |
what about a snowball block with coordinating colors for the "triangles"? i like that look for focus fabrics.

A disappearing 9 patch woulf look great in this fabric.

I am thinking of a landscape windows. Where the focus fabric is cut into squares, and each frame around it resembles looking through a window. This is an example of what I'm dreaming: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-36539-1.htm

Everyone must be getting tired of me posting this link but this is my favorite choice when I don't want to cut a fabric into small pieces.

One of my favorites is sawtooth star with the focus fabric as the center of the star. Like this one I found on the wewb:

My first quilt had fabric in it that I wanted to highlight and not cut up and so I got a pattern from my LQS (called Center Court) that allowed me to do just that and yet make the quilt interesting at the same time.
Thought you might like to look at this as a possibility. Whatever you decide just know that your fabric is great and will make a wonderful looking quilt! |
I think I would just use it for backing--that way, you wouldn't have to cut it up! And for the front of the quilt, I just might paper piece airplanes in the colors in the fabric. I actually have some fabric that is kind of similar, with old time airplanes--and that is what I plan to do with it! :D

i agree with sarahsewing looking at the sky through window panes would be great

Do you have enough to fussy cut the individual planes? Then alternate with a simple 9 patch. We'er all students here at one time or another.

Welcome to the board from Southern California!!!
I like the idea of a Warm Wishes type quilt! |
Thank you all for the great ideas. I knew I would get some really good ideas from you all. I will post a picture when I finish it. Thanks again.

I would have a hard time cutting this up also, but you may want to do a cascading stair-step of charms with some coordinatiing fabric.
|
I'd have a hard time cutting that up too but attic window with a scene behind it and don't forget to put the US in the border, I think that would look great!! or backing so you don't have to cut it up.
|
Hmm, I would piece a center with colors pulled from the pattern and then add the planes as a wide border. The print seems to be lending itself to horizontal bands. You could also do a quilt with 'brick' blocks.
|
don't know what pattern to use on this but im eyeing this fabric!! Perfect for my soon to be here GS.....hmmmm. Sorry i couldn't help but I know someone will give you just the idea you need!
BrendaK....i think that fabric is backwards??? No such thing as s.u.....hehehehe |
