I acquired this piece and thought I would bind it and use as a table runner. There is no story behind it and I couldn't just ignore it since someone has put this much work into it. I don't do hand quilting, however, after lurking on this board and reading your topics, I want to muster up courage and give it a try. No extra fabric came with this so I will need to buy something to use as a binding. What do you recommend? (I apologize for the poor photography.) The piece is 82 inches long. Each block varies but is close to 16".

thanks for the suggestion

For me any color the dark blue or the gold yellow especially if u find the same shade
Nice work

Shemjo 12-12-2009 09:09 AM

I would try to match the yellow/gold background color. If you could find that fabric, great, but I doubt it is still available. Looks nice, and lots of work there already!

Newby0709 12-12-2009 09:11 AM

thanks for looking and your suggestions

Deb watkins 12-12-2009 09:33 AM

I agree, if you can match the yellow/gold that would really finish the piece.

rootyr 12-12-2009 10:33 AM

I agree with the gold color!

beachlady 12-12-2009 10:38 AM

I agree with everything Loretta says!

ranger 12-12-2009 12:09 PM

It's pretty. I'd go with gold for binding.

amma 12-12-2009 01:06 PM

Gold would be very pretty :D:D:D I think it is awesome that you are finishing this up!!!

dglvr 12-12-2009 01:18 PM

Ditto on Loretta's comments. I would go with the gold too.
Nice piece. Would like to see a finished photo. :-D

Eddie 12-12-2009 01:23 PM

I'd go with a gold as well.

MadQuilter 12-12-2009 01:28 PM

You could match the blue, the red, or the gold. The blue would be more blendy. Red and gold would make the center stand out. Your preference.

Pineapple Princess 12-12-2009 02:04 PM

Either the gold or the red. I think red would give it a more Americana feel.

Boston1954 12-12-2009 02:41 PM

I think the gold would look great.

Newby0709 12-12-2009 03:54 PM

Thanks everyone. I believe I will try to match or get close enough to the gold.

Ninnie 12-12-2009 04:09 PM

I would go with red. I think that would frame it just right, just my opinion LOL

shaverg 12-12-2009 04:32 PM

I might try the red. Or if you go with the gold maybe you could find like a tone on tone in the red or gold.

I like this idea. I also thought Pineapple Princess' idea of the Americana look was a good thought.

I started the hand quilting (which I don't do) last night and I can see this will be a LONNNNNNG process for me. The needle just doesn't want to go where I think it should. I know - practice, practice, practice. I have no patience. Next problem arose when I actually started the work and that is knowing where I should quilt. The previous person didn't exactly stitch in the ditch and didn't stitch a quarter inch from the seam. (The threaded needle from the previous quilter was still in the piece and needless to say, it was rusted.) I have no quilting training and this is a real challenge. Actually, the reasons I decided to tackle the task, besides it seemed it shouldn't be abandoned after so much work had been done on it, was to learn and practice.

Gold seems the rule of the majority but I wd go w/ a navy blue solid to act as a frame to encompass it all. BTW, you'll do fine on the HQ, just do a few stitches at a time (like Georgia Bonesteel does). Post pics when you're finished; we'd love to see it! :D :D

Thanks n2scraplvr finding the right colors will be the key.

It's very pretty. Personally, I would use a plain navy as close as possible to the navy in the runner. I wouldn't want to take the focus off of those squares.

quiltease 12-14-2009 06:09 AM

I guess I'm rather conservative but I'd go with blue. Maybe with gold piping...?
bev. :]

topper1 12-14-2009 08:47 AM

I would bring out small orangy color in design or blue gray color in patch. I personally wouldnt go for gold, because already has much gold. i try to utilize all colors, took 3 yrs art in school. betty

You may choose any color of the colors that are on this mat but I prefer the darker....Also depends on the color of the furnitures around.....Whatever...good luck..let us see the results
