I have five rows done on my cathedral windows. I am using different prints of black for the windows. I note the places where the points connect look a little messy. I was thinking of sewing white buttons in all of those areas. What do you think? Will it detract from the pattern? I will need a lot of buttons, and not sure if I want to make that purchase until I get some input. Here are some of the quilts I have done.

Do you want to share???? Just kidding. They are fantastic. How long have you been working on these?

My beginner opinion about messy corners (I've had my share) is if you are not entering it into a quilt show, it just shows that it is hand made and not made in a factory somewhere. It gives it character!

I like your quilts, I would be proud to call them mine....I think you do very good work :D

Your quilts are lovely! I really love scrappy & especially like the top quilt.

I have a tutorial on making Cathedral Windows that might or might not help you. You can usually tack those meeting corners into submission with a little careful placement of thread. Good luck to you.

Here is the tutorial:

Riley i would just like to say i love your hexagon quilt in your avatar. Beautiful that must of taken you a very long time to make. Just love it.

oh gosh, your quilts are great! I kept saying to myself "oh this is my favorite".only to say the same thing when the next one showed up! I do really like the old fashioned look of the pinwheels though..Great Job!

skacian 02-16-2008 10:27 AM

Riley....thanks so much for the link. I only wish I had seen this before I started my cathedral windows!!

Riley 02-16-2008 10:58 AM

Thank you all very much! Did not take overly long on the avatar px, I hand piece primarily & hand quilt all quilts---what is just one more in the long line of quilting fun?

Akacian, sometimes you can barely catch the edge of a single piece of fabric with your needle & thread ---ease those corners in together in an X & make them look a tad better.

I think you are probably just looking down on EACH individual corner & you see ALL your mistakes because you are right above it. When the quilt is finished, trust me, this is a busy quilt & the mistakes just kinda fade into the background.

We ALL make mistakes! I am yet to hear someone say "OH MY WORD!!! LOOK at all thse mistakes!" They don't see the mistakes---they see the beautiful fabric & pattern. (If they are looking at my mistakes, then it is THEIR problem! ha)

I am sure yours is lovely! Just enjoy the process is my suggestion. You will have a lovely thing when done!

Shirley - all your quilts are awesome!!! and your cathedral window is looking fine. I like the white button idea. Wouldn't buy them though - would go to thrift shops and find them on cheap clothing.

Minda 02-16-2008 03:05 PM

Shirley,
Thanks for sharing all of your pictures. I think your cathedral windows quilt looks like it's coming along great.

sandpat 02-16-2008 03:20 PM

skacian..the cathedrals look great to me! I haven't gotten the courage to try that 1 yet...yours will end up being stunning in the black & white

Riley 02-17-2008 10:14 AM

Your Cathedral is lovely! You are doing a fabulous job!

These blocks get easier to do the further you go.
I am improving on my ability to shape the "windows" as I go---and so will you!

Is your quilt black & white or have you shown it to us in black & white scale?

You said you had a long way to go? Think how far you had to go when you started this! You are well underway!

Remember the old saying---"The journey of a million miles begins with the first step"?

It is black and white.

Riversong 02-17-2008 12:18 PM

Those quilts are so pretty! To be honest, I would not add buttons. It would weigh a ton and they would have to be replaced now and then.

Riversong 02-17-2008 12:22 PM

I would not add buttons,,,its so pretty,,,buttons would really add weight, and would need re placed from time to time..

Riversong 02-17-2008 12:23 PM

Beautiful work! My favorite is the postage stamp quilt.

Chele 02-17-2008 06:47 PM

Your quilts are lovely! I wouldn't put a thing on those cathedral windows! That is going to be a lovely quilt! Love it in black and white! Very striking!

Diane007 09-30-2012 07:08 PM

you do lovely work

GGinMcKinney 09-30-2012 07:26 PM

I have a cathedral window in progress. It gets very heavy. I would not add buttons due to the weight. However, if I added buttons to your quilt I would use black buttons. Love the fabrics!!
I second the opinion no one sees the detail. They are overwhelmed with the quilt as a whole. It is beautiful!
