Hubby got this for me today for $10! It's a Singer 404! Needs a good cleaning and an oiling, but isn't she beautiful!!!!

MaryStoaks 07-03-2011 08:15 AM

That looks like the German version of the Singer 404. Is it a 404G? If so, it’s not very common in my neck of the woods. It appears to have the knock-outs for a treadle belt application, and the bobbin winder is on top instead of on the side.

Great catch!

PS-I would trade you, but my photo is of my Grandmother's second machine out of only two in her lifetime. I can't trade this one!

Great find!

Great machine. Either it was really looked after well or nobody used it very much as it seems to be in really good condition. Happy stitching.

AWESOME!!!!!!! I have a 404, also! It's a wonderful machine.

CD - The plate on it says "404-" but no G and I also can't find the serial number anywhere

But I cleaned her up and she makes the most beautiful stitches!!!!! She really needs a good oiling and greasing, so hopefully hubby will have time to help me with that tomorrow. She really is in great condition!!!! She has a service sticker from 2001.

Aaahhh beautiful indeed.

You might try turning the machine on its side and look under the left side of the machine bed. I recently bought a 401 and couldn't find my serial number either. With the help of others, that's where I found mine. It was in such plain view I couldn't believe I missed it. Actually, I should say 'we' since both DH and I were looking for it. :-D

Mine (pictured above) has “404-“ on it too. You have an interesting machine. Let me know if you ever want to get rid of it.

CD - not planning on getting rid of it anytime soon. I'm excited, I now have 4 similar machines to use for my sewing classes :-)

I really need to post a new picture of her all cleaned up!

That’s quite alright. I understand. I just wanted to get my “bid” in just in case. Enjoy your new old machine!
